Expect the endeavour to be expensive and really cold. How rough it is depends on your condition and which guide company you are going with as there are those that cater to tourists who want to take the least strenuous way up.

Check out tripadvisor.

On the contrary its not really expensive. Definitely less then my TMB or Kili trip.

If TS plans to go during September, the temperature will closing in to zero degree once he reaches the last checkpoint at Gorak Shep.

There are a few routes and circuits there but they all require notable effort. Die die have to pass by Phakding, Jorsalle and Namche. There'll be a fork at Namche for you to either go via Chola Pass/ Gyoko Ri or Tengboche/Pheriche.

I did all of them and i think it depends on how you want to approach base camp. Folks who are not so strong will hike to ebc first and then take the anticlockwise route down to Chola Pass and then Gyoko Ri. People who wants ebc to be the grand finale would take Gokyo Ri first. Kongma la area ascend is almost the same altitude as Kala Patthar.

Gokyo is supposingly more scenic because of the lakes. Go for it, make the most out of your trip by covering as much as you can.

If you go anytime later then late September, be expected to experience snow.

I've been there once in April and twice in September, most recently in 2015. Monsoon has never been a problem for us in September period.

TS, as stated in most sources, trekking season in that region ranges between Mar to May and Sep to mid Dec. Even if rainfall and "monsoon" does occur, it usually happens in the lower valley within first 2 - 3 days of your trek between Lukla to Namche. Just make sure you have the appropriate shell and layers and avoid falling ill.
