I am not an expert but the 2nd sentence does not make much sense to me...

mainly the choice of particles...

あたらしいテレビを子供に壊させられた。

i would use a) が b) に (edit this will require 壊れさせられた instead)
or a) を b) が

again I am not an expert and grammatically it might still be right.

That's how jlpts are nowadays. Too many PRCs able to pass the MCP previously just by chionging and memorizing the grammar rules book without understanding the semantics. So they put some traps (grammatically correct but might not make sense in common day to day life occurrence) to weed out such candidates.
.

Nothing to do with PRCs. Anyone taking the test can tikam tikam and still pass since its MCQ. The problem lies with JLPT relying completely on MCQ. No idea on the N stuff now though. If people really keen to improve the quality of the test and the candidates they should make it into full-blown exam with oral and composition parts.

Trust me, the PRC folks' memorizing power is no joke. They with the Koreans make up the main bulk of JLPT candidates in Japan. Since Chinese characters are pretty much non issues for the PRCs, they could pass JLPTs very easily coupled with the Kanzen Master series.

The tikam tikam portion has supposedly been fixed by the JPLT committee with the N version by some form of data analysis where they mark based on correlation of answers in sections. You can read the whole jazz here: https://jlpt.jp/e/about/pdf/scaledscore_e.pdf

I have to agree that they need to include oral and composition to assess candidates better. The current tikam method just isn't sufficient.

開ける is 他動詞

開く is 自動詞

Mari opens the door: マリはドアを開ける (開ける)
The door opens: ドアが開く (開く)

本を開く ? My Japanese is not good but that will be wrong in my opinion.

Should be 本が開く as を is used for 他動詞 and not 自動詞。

It may sounds confusing but you will get used to the idea the more you learn.

An example will be 入れる (put in) and 入る (enter). 入れる is a 他動詞 so it means that the subject is manipulated by someone. 入る is a 自動詞 which means the subject is doing the action "on its own".

To get into a bathtub. you will use お風呂に入る。If you use お風呂に入れる, that will mean that someone carried you and place you into the bathtub. It is not "wrong" if so someone really does that to you. Hence both sentences are correct depending on the context.

There are many more verbs that have both a transitive and intrasitive form. The key is not to think of it in "English" and let it flow into you naturally. For starter, take 開く and 開ける as two different verbs. Depending on the context, you will slowly know which one you should use.
