i got a WD My Book Essential (USB 3.0) about a year back and used it to backup all my important files manually from my iMac (USB 2.0). i also have another WD Book (USB 2.0) which i used it for Time Machine. both are formatted under the Mac OS Ext Journal using Lion.

the Time Machine HDD has no problems whatsoever. works every time like a charm. however, the other HDD has consistency issues. the My Book used to be able to read and write when it's new. yesterday, when i turned it on, it took real long before its icon appeared on the desktop. and when i accessed it, it took some time before its window is shown. however, its contents are not shown. after a while, an error message is displayed saying the disk wasn't eject properly.

i opened Disk Utility and it is not detected. i then disconnected and reconnected it and it appears in Disk Utility albeit for some time. i did the Verify Disk and it says there is an error in the number of threads. tried Repair Disk... it says completed but couldn't unmount disk.

i can't even write to the disk and read from it. i downloaded MacKeeper to try to recover the files but it says unable to read disk.

the HDD size is 2TB but only 500GB is utilized. how much will it cost to recover the files from professional services? what causes the HDD to be corrupted? the HDD is hardly used unless there's a manual backup done.

i'm only Mountain Lion now. if i need to format the HDD, which format type is recommended?

the inconsistency of the HDD makes it readable again. so, managed to get all my files and reformatted it to extFAT.

It is most likely due to enclosure issue, the chipset in the enclosure failing not the HDD. Try getting a replacement enclosure.....
