The price difference appears to be closing so I was wondering what are the main advantages between the 2? I use internals but I keep my case open so I just swop drives when I use them. Do the externals offer a significant advantage in any way?

External offer portability, without the hassle of opening up desktop casing to connect. A 2.5" external HDD with USB2.0/3.0 can easily connected to friends, work, etc desktops/laptops without the need of mains power and tools to open desktop casing.

Really depends on your usage pattern lor. Use external if u need to use the drives on another computer and that u are not able to open the casing on the other computer.

Since your pattern seems to be ok with internal drive since u keep the case open, u can use internal drives.

The idea of open casing for plug/unplug HDD meant lots of dust on PC parts.
And using the bare without casing is suspectible electrostatic damage as well as accidentally short-circuited when powered on.
