Hi Guys,

i intent to get an External SSD for Steam Games.

the 1TB samsung EVO SSD cost near to 500. those internal ones cost 300Ish to 400ish . WOuld there be much performance difference if i get the internal ones and get those cheap china external usb case?

And also does the premium cost of External SSD is worth it over a HDD? cos 1TB to 2TB HDD is pretty affordable now.

For games, I suggest get the SSD (if internals are cheaper) and a cheap China SATA to USB 3.1 (gen 1 or gen 2 also can). With decent USB 3.0 (also called USB 3.1 Gen 1) average transfer rate of about 300MBps, you should be able to run steam games almost as fast as plugging into internal drive. Direct internal connection will give you full SATA3 speed of 500+ MBps, while USB 3.1 Gen 1 have the maximum of 500 MBps (depending on your bandwidth, drivers optimization, and some other factors)

External HDD is good for storage but games will load slow as the external HDD, especially 2.5 inches ones, are really slow and their mechanical components have higher latency than internal ones. They are built for storage purpose, not day-to-day usage purpose. They are very cheap, I do admit, but at the sacrifice in the performance perspective.

appreciate your response. My PC only has USB 3.0, i assume the backward compatibility works fine right?
