Failed SSD

Hello all techies,

I bought a Samsung EVO 860 500gb SSD last July, and it just suddenly died on me. Before I bring it for RMA, can I check is there anyway I can back the data up somewhere first?

Background: The SSD just died one fine morning, totally can't sense it. Tried to swap the power cable, doesn't work. Swap the data cable, doesn't work. Swap 2 other pcs, doesnt work. Can't determine which part died.

Just wanna try my luck here if not will send for data recovery.

totally undetected via other pcs, through different working cables for both power and data also not working. these type issit possible to even as recovery team do it?

magician still reports good drive health for my 850 500gb after almost 4 years. recently rediscovered the receipt (under cybermind) for it and realised it is still under warranty

anyway @ts, u could probably find some data recovery services. there are a few who will diagnose for free and wont charge u if no data recovered.

can try to plug in just the power without data cable and leave it on for at least 30 min then let it cool down for 10 min and repeat again
then plug in data cable
google for more info, had success with this method on crucial

If you have lots of write activity. 2 to 3 years is about time. Especially you use up full SSD capacity.

Agreed, 100% partition is the main culprit for early failures.
Have paid school fees to learn the painful lesson when i squeezed bootcamp and osx to my macbook pro SSD 100%, and it died within 6months of daily read/write 50GBs.

Now, minimum 30% overprovisioned...and backup everyday.

after the 2nd ssd spoilt, i dont even want to rma for free replacement.

I went for another brand and bought an ADATA one instead.

You see, your issue is the 50GB daily read/write. Even if you compare the overprovisioning difference between 50% and 100%, the difference in write amplification is definitely still less than 3 times.

Looks at my 4 Samsung SSD drives.
My Samsung 840 Pro SSD from way back in my old Alienware laptop in 2013 is the oldest amongst all the drives.

It used to be a boot drive in both my laptop and desktop, and now plays the role of data storage over the years.

Almost 100 TB of writes on it.

Looks to still be fine after so long. So yes, a good provisioning of space to ensure it is not 100% utilized could have played a part though I previously also let it be using all the way till 100% too.

how much is your data worth? if its worth the thousands u gonna spend on data recovery, u should have backups.

840 pro is MLC, mine from 7 years back is also running fine.

data worth nothing much actually, didn't know a normal data recovery will cost so much lolol. guess im just gonna let it go to hell then.

There is no logic behind this kind of recommendation, just purely depend of luck hoping the disk is not dead completely.

Guys a quick question. Got back a brand new 500gb evo 860. Currently wanting to clone the windows and all to this hard drive and let this be the boot drive. But I want to partition as well, keep 150gb for clone and the rest for own usage. Quite noob at this so do I partition first then clone, or clone the drive then partition?
