ext hdd is a seagate FreeAgent Go. i have a usb Y cable. if i plug in only the power side of the usb cable into a usb port, the hdd will spin pretty much immediately.
however when using the hdd (data+power) say i leave it alone for 5min it seems the hdd will power down (power saving function i think?) but then when i need to use it again the hdd may take like >1m to start spinning again (can tell when 1)you don't feel it spinning and 2)i put it right next to my ear i don't hear it spinning)
