Hi!

I am thinking of building a ESXi whitebox when Haswell reaches SG.
Hoping to make it fanless to reduce noise.

PSU: I know there are fanless PSUs out there. However, these PSUs can be fanless because they rely on good air circulation within the case or simply because they are so well designed that they really don't need a fan?

CPU: Assuming I don't overclock, can I just slap on a large radiator (CM212?) without any fans to achieve passive cooling? (or will a fanless Corsair H60 work better?)

I'll be using the Haswell equivalent of 3770.

I'll probably go for a small form factor mATX case and remove all the fans.

you mean heatsink (cm212)?

You can always opt for those low rpm fans (silent fans) that push some amount of air but not make any audible noise at all. Its always good to have some form of airflow. Such fans won't be the main contributer to noise. HDD spinning etc might even be louder.

Fanless mATX system = lots of holes in casing for dust to enter

Single intake fan with dust filter much better. The single intake fan may create 'some' positive air pressure (not much, but better than nothing) and reduce the dust slightly.

yes opps mean the CM212 heatsink.

will be using SSDs only - so virtually no moving parts at all if really fanless.

maybe i'll use h60 with 1 intake fan in push config.
