Faulty Cat5e Lan Port?

I am currently on the network below.

Router - Lan - Gigabit switch - Lan - Room.

If I use lan to connect to router and switch, I can get about 700mbps on my notebook. Even when I use the switch to connect to access point, speed is 700mbps too when notebook on lan to access point.

However, when i use the lan in my room, I can only get 100mbps.

FYI, all the wires are Cat5e.

Can anyone advise what maybe the issue?

1) Check if your computer lan port is gigabit

2) Try swap the lan cable.

This time try connect from Router -> gigabit switch , if still getting 100mbps it might be the wired is faulty.

The contractor may have used a cat.5 cable instead of cat. 5e or cable faulty.

whats the gigabit switch u using? are u sure its gigabit switch? else your cable most likely is cat 5.

The contractor may have used a cat.5 cable instead of cat. 5e or cable faulty.

whats the gigabit switch u using? are u sure its gigabit switch? else your cable most likely is cat 5.

u can only do that if u have a laptop. but den again u can Google your switch to find out more details.

your connection to the switch when testing is gigabit right?

but your lan connection from the switch to your room is not?

get your contractor to check the cable/ plug/ port. probably not done properly, or is using cat5..

Yes that is correct. Lan to switch is gigabit but not lan in room. By getting the contractor is the only option to find out if he uses Cat5 or not done properly? Any other ways as room was renovated few years back. Thanks!

my new place cat6 wires on the wall laid by HDB, 2 lines so far have wires broken in them. go get a network tester n try. any of the 8 wires broken will cause speed to reduce to 10/100. they really suck.

how are you testing your speeds?

if it is by speedtest, I think m1's 1gbps is abit hard to reach 1gbps. their minimum is about 700+

So it may not be your cables. since cables are either limiting you to 10mbps or 100mbps.

anyway ts, use elimination method to isolate to a single cable.

e.g. if switch > 1 lan cable to room > laptop, means that cable (or plug) faulty.
if switch > cable > wall ports (lan cable to room) > cable > laptop, means you got 3 cables, so need test the cables first to ensure not faulty, then it will mean your wall port cable not good.


btw, to test you can use speedtest (since your internet plan is way above 100mbps), or check your network link speed on your laptop. no need special tools.

network link speed basically is like this : 10mbps/100mbps/1gbps.

definitely have noting to do with ipv4 and ipv6. (this is internet setting for ip address.)

I check using laptop, only my room lan has write speed of 100mbps so definitely something wrong with my lan port?

And a newbie qn, will buying gigabit home plugs help to achieve higher than 100mbps significantly if i did not change the lan port?

if really ur room lan is the only 1 with 100mbps means the cable is either cat 5 or have issues.

it depends. if your house powerline is good, den u can achieve more otherwise u have to deal with it max speed output it can provide.

Btw, a side qn, when i plug my notebook directly into router, the max speeds I got was around 200mpbs on my 1gbps plan. I am not expecting too much of the promised speeds but I thought I can get around 500mbps with notebook directly connected into router.

can u try using high performance on your laptop and test it again. its unlikely u can get 200mbps on 1gbps on a direct cable to router. (but whats the laptop u using?)

even my 500mbps i can get around 400+
