Hi all,

I am looking at building a new gaming rig with a budget of $2500 without any OS or accessories, just CPU and monitor, and have come up with the following setup. Are there any tweaks I can/should make to make the setup more cost-effective?

i7 4790 asus vanguard b85
coolermaster hyper 103 cpu cooler
kingston 16gb ddr3 1600 cl10 hyperx
asus gtx 970 4gb strix dc2 oc
samsung 850 evo 500gb ssd
wd 1tb blue
samsung 24x dvdrw
seasonic m12 ii 620w evo psu
corsair 350d case
corsair af120mm led fan
dell u2414h 24 inch ips panel monitor

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Cheers,

Dont think you need to spend till $2.5k.

What are the games you playing? And you also wont need an i7 to begin with. With that 2.5k you could have gotten a Dual GPU SLI rig.

2.5k

MSI Z97S SLI Plus + i5-4690k ~ $471
GSKills Ripjaws 1866mhz 2x4gb kit RAM ~ $119
WD Blue 1tb ~ $70
Samsung EVO 850 256gb ~ $181.50 (Prices before discount, wait for lazada promo $20/30/50 voucher or participating cards for extra discounts)
MSI GTX970 4gb Armor edition x2 SLI ~ $1018 (Price before discount, wait for lazada promo $100 voucher or participating cards for extra discounts)
Superflower Leadex 850w 80+ Gold Fully Modular PSU ~ $189 (Price before discount, wait for lazada promo $20/30/50 voucher or participating cards for extra discounts)
Fractal Design Arc Midi ~ $129
LG DVD Drive ~ $21
Dell U2414H 23.8inch eIPS Panel ~ $300 (Best Denki limited to 5 sets till this weekends)
Corsair H100i GTX Cooler ~ $165

Total ~ $2463 (Prices after $200 discount for both GPU). Buy at tradepac unless stated. DIY

What you actually need.

MSI H97M G43 + i5-4460 ~ $363
GSKills Ripjaws 1600mhz 2x4gb kit ~ $115
WD Blue 1tb ~ $70
Samsung EVO 850 256gb ~ $181.50 (Prices before discount, wait for lazada promo $20/30/50 voucher or participating cards for extra discounts)
MSI GTX970 4gb Armor edition ~ $509 (Price before discount, wait for lazada promo $100 voucher or participating cards for extra discounts)
FSP Aurum S 500w 80+ Gold PSU ~ $89 (Price before discount, wait for lazada promo $20/30/50 voucher or participating cards for extra discounts)
Sharkoon BD28 ~ $74
LG DVD Drive ~ $21
Dell U2414H 23.8inch eIPS Panel ~ $300 (Best Denki limited to 5 sets till this weekends)

Total ~ $1622.50. (Prices after $100 discount for GPU). Buy at tradepac unless stated. DIY

Hi royfrosty,

Thank you for the detailed response. I forgot to mention that I was looking to build the rig to run some of the games coming out later this year like The Witcher 3 and Arkham Knight at the best settings if possible.

In view of this, would both the setups you mentioned be able to achieve this purpose? I would also like to find out your reasons for suggesting going for a dual GPU sli rig instead.

Thanks again for the help!

Both rig is able to handle both very well.

And yes at max settings.

I would suggest dumping more money into gpus rather than cpu. Theres no point to spent on an i7 where the extra frame rate for the above mentioned wont even yield additional 2 digit fps.

Most of the time when it comes into gaming only the gpu has the most horsepower. Not cpu

Spending the items on uneccesary parts will result in your overall performance.

Dual gpu is good to have but not a must. If you have 2.5k to spend, that rig will be way better than your current setup in any ways.
