Hi, need advise of the guru here.

current configuration with 1gbps Singtel :
Netlink ==> ONT ==>ASUS RT-AC5300 ( as bridge ) ==> Linksys Router MX5300 ==> LAN cable to QNAP NAS
MX5300 also wireless as mesh to another MX5300 and 2-3 Linksys WHW03

thinking of changing to 10gbps.
question :
Reason for the above config is NAS need to have fixed IP
1. if using ONT like M1 and changing to 10 Gbps, what hardware i need to change to optimized ? and is the above the best configuration ? if not what is best config ?
2. if using ONT, can setup Qnap fixed IP ? and also need to change what hardware ?

Thanks very much in advance

1) Asus has EOLed RT-AC5300, so better to upgrade. It has a recent firmware updates due to AIcloud related security issue. But you may still want to change it.

2) What do you mean by running RT-AC5300 as a bridge? Are you using Singtel ONT or ONR?

3) What is the budget if you want to upgrade?

4) In general, no point to change to 10Gbps, M1 6Gbps is of better value.

5) What do you mean by fixed IP for QNAP?

Hi Xiaofan,
Thanks for replying.
1. Noted
2. using Singtel ONT at the moment. - RT-AC5300 just as modem basically
3. Probably around 300-500 for Router ? at least future proof to wifi 7 and also compatibility of the mesh. or budget can be higher if needed to change to different mesh if needed
4. Noted. 6Gbps is fine as well
5. i was told that if i run from the termination point to Singtel ONT then MX5300, the router does not able to do a fix IP. for NAS normally need fixed IP right ? so after using RT-AC5300 as bridge, managed to fixed the IP to QNAP NAS at 192.168.1.123 ( for eg ) and this IP is fixed.

2. So RT-AC5300 is the main router. It is not a bridge. It is not a modem. Please do not use the "modem" word for Fibre Internet in general. Rather you should "ONT" or "ONR". ONT is kind of "Fibre Modem". ONR is kind of "Fibre modem router".

3. You can consider M1 6Gbps at S$34.90 per month, it comes with free Archer BE805 (resale value of about S$270 to S$300).

5. Linksys Velop MX5300 is not compatible with Singtel ONT (no support of Singtel VLAN), that is why you need a router before Linksys Velop MX5300. There is no such issue with M1 ONT.

Anyway, if you do not want to spend extra money, you can keep Linksys Velop MX5300 mesh, just change the main router from Asus RT-AC5300 to the free Archer BE805.

M1 XGS-PON ONT --> Free TP-Link Archer BE805 as main router --> Linksys Velop MX5300 mesh

TP-Link Archer BE805 is a 10G capable WiFi 7 router, so kind of future proof.

4. So the issue of not being able to get a fixed IP is the Vlan and using M1 Archer BE805 will fixed this and i would be able to get the fixed IP as well. correct ?
but this will this still be the same config that i am using now ? i still need the Archer BE805 and Linksys MX5300 ?
can i just use Linksys MX5300 without the Archer BE805 ? because MX5300 itself is also a router ?
and if i can use MX5300 as router connect to ONT then i will use 1 less device. but the question is can i still get the fixed IP for the NAS ?

Sorry, just checked, my area M1 not ready yet for 6gbps
who else can i go with using ONT ?

Nothing to do with "fixed IP". You can reserver fixed IP for any ISP and basically any router.

Linksys Velop does not work with Singtel ONT at all as it does not support Singtel VLAN, that is why you need to use the Asus RT-AC5300 (which supports Singtel VLAN). in front of LInksyss MX5300.

No such issue with M1 ONT since M1 does not use VLAN.

Yes you can use Linksys MX5300 as the main router and not to use M1 issued Archer BE805. But then you are not able to "fully utilize" the 6Gbps bandwidth. Rather it can only use 1Gbps bandwidth.

Sorry, just checked, my area M1 not ready yet for 6gbps
who else can i go with using ONT ?

All ISPs now use ONT, except Singtel/WC.

I will suggest Stahub 5Gbps offer at S$29.55 per month, with free HB710.

Starhub XGS-PON ONT --> Free TP-Link HB710 as main router --> Linksys Velop MX5300 mesh.

Again you can use Linksys Velop MX5300 as main router as well, but then you are using Starhub 5Gbps service as 1Gbps.

For M1, I understand they give ONR if you sub to their 10G. For ST, I'm already on ONR with Orbi as a Mesh, my NAS has a fixed static IP(s) that I set .

Don't have to worry too much on the NAS portion, you can plug direct to your ONR and assign an IP on the NAS, it will work as well.

FYI, M1 never uses ONR, only ONT.

Starhub used to have the Nokia XGS-PON ONR (with AX6000 wireless function) option for 5Gbps/10Gbps plan but now only uses ONT.

My friend just recon her M1, she was asking for ONR, they say only for 10G they give ONR. She is sttll on ONT 3G.

ST has been bugging me to upgrade to 5Gbps but I ask them which website gives me data at 5Gbps speeds, if they can tell me I'll upgrade, else 1Gbps with 50-60 devices on weekends still works good for me.

For my ST, they say only for new sign ups, so i ask to cancel my account and sign up a new one. Of course they didn't, they just gave me the ONR after they realize they sounded stupid. After that I had some conflicts on my home network with the ONR, they replaced one new one and asked me to keep the old one.

Reason for ONR is just to run 1 modem less, meaning 1 less power switch and devices nearer to it can plug direct to the RJ45. Having that additional ST modem was irritating and waste of a 3 pin plug slot.

I was on SH SCV last time, support was horrible and they limited the upload speeds to 15Kbps, when ADSL came and more... I quit SCV and don't really want to go back to SH anymore. Anyway this is not a ranting place for me, apologies if I digressed.

In your case with the NAS in play, best to opt for ISP with ONT. Might have to avoid Simba too.

you mean different brand can be compatible ? so 1xTP-Link HB710 as router and all other Linksys Velop that i have can connect to the HB710 and act as mesh ?

Two wireless SSIDs, they can work together, but not compatible as a mesh.

Can explain more how to do about it ?
also, correct me if i am wrong, 2 SSID meaning if my house 10,000 sq meter end to end, and 1 place HB710 in one end and linkys in the other end when i walk to the one end, will use HB710 and if i walk to the other end will use linksys mesh ?

Imagine a venn diagram ? Each circle is the coverage of respective routers, overlap area where transition should occur hopefully. If there is no overlap, means you need a third circle.

If you have such a large flat with 10k sqm, then probably you need to engage a professional to help you. It is beyond my capability. 🤣

Anyway, please post your floor plan with details the location of the FTP, the current placement of the Singtel ONT, Asus RT-AC5300 and the two Linsys Velop MX5300 and the two/three WHW03 nodes.

Netlink ==> Singtel ONT ==>ASUS RT-AC5300 ( as main router ) ==> Linksys Router MX5300 ==> LAN cable to QNAP NAS
Linksys Velop MX5300 also wireless as mesh to another MX5300 and 2-3 Linksys WHW03.

hahahha, i wish, the size is just an example only. that aside, i am glad my understanding of the 2 SSID is correct.

if ONR can assign fixed IP to NAS, actually suits me as well.
in this case it does not matter to use ONT or ONR ?
