Quick qn: is it possible to buy my own fibre optic cable ~20-30m… say from online sites or sls/t and do my own laying from the original fibre tp pt at the living or main door all the way to a room? Will there be signal degradation or packet/attenuation loss? Note this isn’t splicing. Nor is it a relocation of the tp pt. Anything I should take note of to prevent damage to this fragile wire?

Yes. It's possible. I did that for my old and current flat. No issue with signal degradation. I asked my electrician to hide it in the false ceiling. U can also hide it in trunking if u do not have false ceiling.

Be careful not to bend the cable too much or the glass fibre inside the cable might snap....

Do note that u can also leave ur ont at the ftp point and lay a lan cable to connect to ur router at ur room unless u need the telephone to be in ur room or u need he ont to be in ur room for some other purposes.

The fibre cable thin enough to slip it under and thru the door. The lan cfm cannot :s22:

for some reason, installers don't like this option. twice in my experience, their reasoning is they cannot charge extra for laying a longer optical cable. personally i prefer laying utp than optical cable, as it is more rugged and less prone to damage if DIY need to change location.

telephone alternative, can consider DECT. just need to always return handset to base, else when battery flat, can be hard to find

Telephone u can use twin dect phones for convenience. The master in the ftp point and the slave in ur room.

As to whether u want to lay a optical or lan cable is up to u and ur needs. My electrican is ok with both and I chose optical as I prefer the ont to be at my tv console.

sure, no right or wrong. just user preference and use case. Cheers

edit. just to clarify, the "installers" i refer to are the NLT installers. if it's your own contractor, he will have different considerations since you are not paying him a fixed rate.

Mine was done during reno for my then new bto so the uncle was quite obliging...

Do take note that if u are laying lan cable and using star hub TV in ur room, u most likely need to lay 2 lan cables to ur room as star hub TV signal is from another port of the ont to ur router, based on what I have read about it online so u might want to take that into consideration if u are using it.

As for the nlt installers not willing to lay the fibre optic cable due to charging issues, do take a look at the pricing by netlink Trust on additional fibre run.

thanks for the pointer on pricing. yes, the nlt guys were trying to convince me to lay the optical cable to exceed the 15m run. in the end, i installed the ftp at a convenient point, then DIY the rest of my cabling. so far so good.

for rooms, i normally lay 3x or 4x cables. over time, always find uses for it. redundancy is always good, especially when you need that extra point some time after the reno is done

Pm me if u really need him. His charges are market rate at 100 bucks per line and that's even when he is in charge of the electrical works in the renovation. But he is a nice guy as he did some electrical stuff free for me.

If u really want to get cheap lan cabling prices then do look out for bangalas doing reno in a new estate or doing painting in in ur neighbourhood and ask them whether they know of any friends who can do lan cabling. Their prices can be damn low as compared to a normal electrician.

I got my plumber through this method and saved a bundle! 🤣🤣🤣

Do note that the bangala who intro u to his friend will get his commission added to ur pricing which is still low compared to the normal electrician. The real savings will come the next time u contact the lan cabling bangala directly..

@Elspeth dont think to save the cost, if you want to, lay up from the Termination Point, all the way to the out side of your MasterbedRM or studies

[ future proofing for any potential family expension or moving rooms/ swapping

P.s dont mind me PCW here +1 , testing the upvoting system lols

for folks coming across this thread, fiber is definite great if you've long hallway or you want " minimum footprint" from cabling.

do note, cat6e is more than enough even if you wish to NAS it but alas, if one reads the other grumblings in the threads of where sob husbands gather, its ALWAYS AESTHECIS

yhes, this is how i did house minor works, and moving in the early days with fewer possessions.

i approached the workers directly. agree on the 1st time commission but you build up a network of "contractors" for small jobs. the bigger the network, the better the bargaining power and fall back if particular workers are not available.

For moving, i rent van/lorry, go down to known places where the daily workers wait for assignments, approach them directly. saves a lot on moving costs, so long as you are willing to be involved with the actual moving process.
