Gathering some ideas for a file server upgrade path
File server will be used for hosting mostly media files, personal files, bittorrent etc.
Currently:
Casing: Bitfenix Prodigy
Mainboard: MSI E350ia-e45 (4 Sata, 1 x16 pcie2.0 slot)
RAM: 6GB DDR3
Hardisk: 3x 4TB Toshibas
SSD: 1x 128gb SSD used as OS disk
OS: Windows server 2012 R2
Setup: Windows Storage Spaces single parity. Roughly 8TB useable.
Read performance saturates gigabit connection but write performance is pretty bah (40-60mb).
Future:
Casing: Fractal Design R5 (i already have this from a previous build. practically unlimited drive bays.)
Mainboard: something with 2x gigabit ports. unless plexing cpu don't really matter i guess. anything thats got more than 4 sata ports is likely gonna burn (upwards of 200bucks), so just go HBA card suah.
HBA Card: LSI SAS 9211-8i 2008E 6Gb flashed in IT mode
RAM: 8GB DDR4. such a waste of my previous ddr3. zzz
Hardisk: 5x 4TB.
SSD: 3x 128gb SSD (x1 OS disk x2 writebackcache)
OS: Windows server 2012 R2
Setup: Windows Storage Spaces single parity with x2 ssds for writeback cache. 16TB available.
A regular mainboard (4x sata), cheapo HBA (8x sata) should yield 12 devices. I will be using 8 of those.
Idea is for larger capacity as well as writeback cache to improve write performance.
sadly for windows storage spaces i think for existing storage pool i cannot just add WBC ssds (it's the tiered storage setting thingy)to it, probably have to re-do the entire thing. i know adding/replacing regular drives is fine. anyone got experience?
