Hi all,

My files for 1 drive have suddenly become Read-only and I cant save new files on the drive. I checked permissions and ownership with another drive on my computer and they're the same but the issue is still there. I can copy the read-only files to another drive and open them from there.

Any idea what's the problem? Running Windows 10.

Thank you!

Portable hard disk, MicroSD or internal hard disk? My SDcard became read only when it's spoiled... Tried fixing etc can't work.

Also, I cant download something from the internet and save it onto the drive or "Save As" from MS Office. It says I do not have permission to save in this location. But when I try to copy a file from another drive over, it asks for admin position (I am the admin).

It could be the drive dying. Get all ur data out of it first. Test the drive using HDTune Pro.

I am actually facing something similar for my WD Green 1TB also.. able to see the files, but cannot copy them out. When connected to the SATA ports, it causes the PC start up to be real slow until it looks like it hangs there.

I am now trying to find a way to extract the files... the drive will keep calculating space when i copy the files out, and thereafter tell me need to format disk to use.

RIP. Read-only symptom is more or less telling u the drive is going to die. It's to give the user enough time (hopefully) to take out data before the drive goes 'boom'

The programme found no problems with my disks.

If it is not a case of corrupted file structure, then it might be a driver issue. You can try this on your second disk (not the OS disk). From Device Manager, Disk Drives - right click on the disk and select update driver software. Let it auto-search for best driver. If this works, you can try it on your OS disk.

If this doesn't work, there are more complicated solutions you can try involving Ubuntu or registry editing.

However, since you have already backed up your data, I would suggest a clean reinstall of Win 10 and then copying over the data from your third drive.

Weird problem. Does this only happen in Windows 10 ?

No, happens in Win 7 and 8 as well. I seldom have to trouble-shoot this kind of problem as I always have at least one external backup for my data. Any problem, I will just format and copy over the data.

Formatting my 2nd disk now to see if the problem persists. If not, I'll just do a clean install for Windows 10. It wouldn't wipe the data on my 3rd drive right? And I can just download the Media Creation tool from Microsoft to do the clean install without a CD Key?

It shouldn't affect your third drive. However, your second drive shouldn't have been affected in the first place. If I were you, I would unplug the third drive to be safe.

Yes, you can use the Media Creation tool for the clean install. You can skip the CD key part but if you want to enter a key, it's there in my Windows 7 thread.

The fastest to test would be to just plug the drive in question into another computer that's working. Using Windows 10, but haven't encountered errors... Yet
