For a first-timer, I would say Beijing. But I suppose you will visit all of them eventually, to get a balanced picture.

Beijing, to better understand the history and see the development of China. Check out my couple trip thread.

And don't miss the Great Wall. Tobbogan ride at Mutianyu was very fun.

Shanghai.

Beijing is good for historical sites, but feels old and run down in certain areas. Guangzhou is dim sum and shopping. Shanghai is a modern city with abit of european feel along the bund and french concession. And one thing about Shanghai is 3 tourist cities Suzhou (china's venice), Nanjing (see WW2 history) and Hangzhou r just a short 1 hour train ride away.

Their train is awesome and tickets are cheap, so can consider heading to other parts. By bullet train, Tianjin -- slightly more laid back -- is only 30 mins away. Then again, depends on what you want to do in Beijing ... I do think 10 days is too much for Beijing though.

For first timer, I suggest you go to Shanghai or Beijing, following Guangzhou and chengdu.

Is one week too much for beijing?

Nope. Beijing is big and some of the attractions, by the time you are done, you wont be able to make it in time for the other.

Most attractions are within walking distance of the subway/metro with the exception of the Ming tombs and the Great Wall.

I suppose 5-6 days is too short for shanghai + the other 3 cities? deciding between shanghai+suzhou+wuxi or beijing.

ya not sure if too short though, haven't really looked into the places to go. suppose 2 days each will be better. although not exactly first time but the last was eons ago on a packaged tour of shanghai, hangzhou, suzhou, wuxi, nanjing and a lot has changed probably.

guess, just shanghai+suzhou/wuxi as mentioned or solely beijing.
