First timer going to china

First time going to china in end october... just something that i got caught up discussing with my partner..
We have set up AliPay and WeChat and linked to our YouTrip. (this is fine as from what i have read in the forum)

We were discussing whether to if it's necessary to get a china number? in case if any contact number was needed from us during our trip.
If so.. isit recommended to get a sim card from the airport?
Or we can use subscribe to cmlink to get a virtual china phone number?

It depends whether you need to travel extensively and want to experience exploring rural area. How many days will you be there? In cities, data sim is enough for navigation.

It will be useful if you need to contact your hotel to arrange for a pickup from train station or airports. Or just ask for directions. Also I think you need a local number to book didi, when the area has no public transport.

Not sure about CMLink virtual card. Can you make calls? This is important. Else global roaming with our local service providers will suffice.

Not all airports have local SIM cards on sale. Major international airports are your best bets.

Not entirely necessary but some of the tourist attractions do need a local number to book in advance. One of the way to overcome this issue is to book your tickets via klook, trip,com etc.

Other than that there are no real need to have a local number.

Last Oct/Nov, I still have to fill in physical white /blue card.

I went china via guangzhou need to fill the white card.

As for number for didi not entirely true, you can register your SG number via wechat. Book the didi via the mini app in wechat is the same. Your sg number will be used when booking didi, so when you board the ride just give the last 4 digit of your phone number.

When I exited from Hangzhou, I didn’t have the chop on my passport. I supposed it was via E-gate. Can’t really remember clearly.

But exiting from Kunming was manually done.

Hope I have no issue entering China on my next trip.

Just highlighting that CMLink's 1CMN number is more for SG usage than CN usage.
Please check and read up before signing for it.
