cost for jr pass is 19000 yen
one way trip from tokyo to yamagata already cost 12000 yen +- so clearly jrpass is a must.
as for green seat, i believe you can top up but im not sure about the price.

maybe you can check on hyperdia.com

Should be worth it. The pass also can use for NEX and JR lines travel within Tokyo if you're not going to use all 5 days on the SKS outside Tokyo.

Green car need to top up but really there isn't a need to. Normal car already comfortable and spacious enough IMO.

Make sure you buy the correct one cos there's 2 seperate JR East passes nowadays (tohoku and nagano-Niigata).

If you want to top up to Green Seat, I suggest you get the Green Pass instead. The Green Pass is about 30% more expensive than the Ordinary Pass. Other than allowing you a Green seat on the Shinkansen, you're also eligible to ride on Green seats on certain local trains (if there are). I know the Yamanote line doesn't have Green car.

I used my 5D pass for 6D.
sometimes if you are taking local train in rural area, the station master might just let you pass without checking the time stamp on your JR pass.
I'm traveling free for One whole day between Hakuba and Matsumoto :s13:
