Travellers to China may like to follow developments in digital RMB because it is a break from the Alipay and Weixin Pay eco-systems with their associated security risks. Particularly attractive, is the prospect that there is no need to verify one's identity with a passport scan.
I have not been able to register on the e-CNY app though, as the verification code never came to my +65 number.

i'll check out the holding cost (and admin hassle, if any) of a local number there first on my next trip.

i dun really need the local data, so the monthly $12.80 is on the high side (SGD7.7+5.1, approx CNY70)

This eCNY app was available for download from 2022. If this App have been popular, do you think it needs introduction ?

Just stay put with Alipay and WeChat Pay, the most convenient ways for payment. I am still waiting for the wallets of both Apps, having the ability of top up, for foreigners.

Looks like even in China it is only a small number of cities that are enable .
Under the list Guangdong , i think it should be Guangzhou because i tried with a telephone number from Guangdong province and it failed.

I suppose you were using a Chinese number for this test?

Hopefully by my next visit to the mainland e-CNY will be in more widespread usage across the country. It has been slow because the Alipay and Wechat eco-systems have been entrenched by commercial interests for the past 15 years.

First i tired using Spore's number , failed .

Second I tried using China 's number without inserting the China sim card into the phone , it failed too .

This morning I insert the China's sim into the phone and tried again , successful .

By the way I am in China now , guess you need to be in the location as it verifies where you are before approval .

As you can see from the screenshot I didn't topup the wallet , don't think I will be using it in the near future since I have China's banking account linked to all my Alipay and Wechat pay .

This rang a bell. It is possible that the app only works when one is on location in China using a roaming service.

To read the underlined in the MAS press release literally, you have to be there to be able to open and top-up the wallet:

• Launch of the e-CNY pilot for Singapore travellers. The e-CNY pilot enables Singapore travellers to open and top-up e-CNY wallets locally for merchant payments in China. This initiative complements other linkages to enhance payment convenience for travellers.

This rang a bell. It is possible that the app only works when one is on location in China using a roaming service.

To read the underlined in the MAS press release literally, you have to be there to be able to open and top-up the wallet:

When I tried my Singapore, I was actually on the roaming services(CMlink ) and waited for the OTP it never came . Tried twice and it failed .

For the China number , I have two HP , one an old Iphone 6 which is inserted with China sim.

I tried to setup e-CNY on my other handphone with the Singapore sim but using the China mobile telephone number and key in the OTP from the iphone 6 , it failed.

Seems the China's sim must be on the same HP.
I used the iphone6 as a spare.

My usual HP when in China is linked to a pocket Wifi which is definitely much cheaper.

Once setup your can create a password login , so I guess you won't get an OTP each time you use it .

I managed to set up the wallet account and added Trust card while I am in Shanghai. It accepts Visa and MasterCard. However, it does not allow me to top up wallet with Trust Card citing the wallet does not allow currency exchange. I can only find the option to add one card.

I managed to receive the OTP for the first time but the verification went no further than a box which says "not in pilot region".

It may be the case that you need to top it up with a RMB bank account, which is where ICBC and BOC come in.

Yes you are right , only for ICBC and BOC Singapore unless you have account with Chinese banks in China.
