Yes you are right , only for ICBC and BOC Singapore unless you have account with Chinese banks in China.

Since nothing can be set up here, I uninstalled the app. Till my next visit to China.

It may be the case that you need to top it up with a RMB bank account, which is where ICBC and BOC come in.

When I set up my wallet, I was given a long list of China Banks to choose from. I chose ICBC. It is weird they only accept Visa/MasterCard to be added to my wallet, not even Union Pay. Also, if they allow us to add Visa/MasterCard, rightfully it is meant for Top Up function.

By the way, I set up my wallet using SG registered number (Singtel).

Maybe you can take a look at Ni Hao China app that was launched in 2025 by Union pay before your next trip .

Yes. The entire registration process broke into 2 parts. I was on auto roaming on Singtel when I received the sms while waiting for my ride at the airport. When my ride arrive, I did not continue with the process. I continued the registration when I got to the hotel, where I connected to wifi.

Besides, it costs nothing to install an app and test it for a few minutes.

This one uses UnionPay QR code for POS transaction. For travel within the big cities and major tourism sights, it may suffice. provided UnionPay promotes it further to more merchants.

First i tired using Spore's number , failed .

Second I tried using China 's number without inserting the China sim card into the phone , it failed too .

This morning I insert the China's sim into the phone and tried again , successful .

By the way I am in China now , guess you need to be in the location as it verifies where you are before approval .

As you can see from the screenshot I didn't topup the wallet , don't think I will be using it in the near future since I have China's banking account linked to all my Alipay and Wechat pay .
