Japan is big. Which part of Japan? Can read Chinese? How mobile? Usually must walk a lot. Tokyo isn't a problem.
Sorry to hijack thread.
How abt Hokkaido for senior around 60's of age?
Will language be a big issue?

Btw how old? I just went with my mum 2weeks ago and we did a lot of walking.

FYI, depends on the city u going.
if u take trains some station got many exit but lift at selected exit.
need to climb or walk down stairs.
Some places need to change trains where u need to exit and walk a distance to another station/platform, it's packed and squeezing during peak hours.
And dun think they will give up seats to older ppl in train.

one important thing to take note especially when taking train in big groups, the same platform might have diff types of train
E.g. Local, rapid, express.
Only local train stop at every station while the others skip certain station.
If u misconnect and unable to board the train, ur separate members alighting next station waiting for u but the next coming train u took might also skip the station they alighted.

Tour will be better as they can sit n take a rest/nap inside bus.

Just like free-and-easy in Taiwan. Walking is a must. No choice. If you join a tour group, then you don't need to walk too much. There will be a tour bus to take you to designated places. :s13:

There are priority seats for elderly, pregnant, disabled in trains, usually towards the ends of each carriage, and the signs are quite huge. Usually Japanese are quite respectful towards elderly, and I seen a few cases that more able folks will give up seats. But this may not happen during peak periods.

We did a lot of walking together with my 60s mum and dad. We easily clocked 16k or 20k+ step per day and yet my mum having more stamina than me!!

Take trains and walk to ameyoko, harajuku, akihabara, asakusa, yanaka Ginza, Ueno park, Odiaba, tskuji market, ikebukuro for 1st 5 days...quite straining but rewarding with tons of shopping and food.
6th-10th days -rented car and drive ard to karuizawa and hakone back narita. This is the easiest parts. :s13:

Yes..but you must cater your schedule to their age....so maybe 2 days in Tokyo..and make sure you plan the route you intend to walk carefully...however..this can really be done if you've done the route yourself previously.... after that you can bring them out to some outlying areas outside the bigger cities..for Tokyo it would be in Hakone or Kairuizawa or wherever is convenient from a time and money perspective and stay for a couple of days...
i think its important to remember that when you plan..try not to be too ambitious....course the older folks will not enjoy themselves if they feel tired or even worse sick
