How the heck did I not know of BackBlaze. And I just renewed my 200GB G One subscription. :(

Okay, nevermind. BackBlaze has no Linux client and no webUI, so it makes no sense to use it.

no Linux client can use Linux --> Windows mah... its how you go around their restriction. ;)

your research lousy sia,

not currently enforced, you'll need your own domain to sign up though.

BackBlaze backup also unlimited, doesn't meter how much you backup/upload.

Google's is not enforced true but for how long? There's always a risk that they might enoforce all of a sudden similar to Amazon. Still, I can try this and some domains can be cheap like.... .site or .tech domains. Alibaba cloud is selling em like 1.1 usd for first year and 7usd for renewal.

And why would I look at backblaze? That's a backup solution. I wanna stream my files, not download files to my device. They do have a streaming option but it's charged by traffic. The more you stream, the more expensive it is.

erm... even if Google enforce limits they will not delete whatever you have uploaded, they will just restrict you from uploading new files if you are over the preset limit but rest assured they won't do this to paid business subscribers because they have a ton of free edu/team drives leechers to deal with. :o

Backblaze is a backup service, I dunno what kind of content you have or what you use them for or your data not important enough that you do not need backup for but hey its extra info. I heck care what you stream, there are always legitimate users that value their work or personal data who needs backups.

BackBlaze's true value is as an entire system backup stored in the cloud, not for basic file and data backup. I got my paid Onedrive and G One subscriptions for those.

Not having a proper native client to do system backups to the cloud is a huge hassle. I could do Clonezilla backups and upload them manually, but BackBlaze does not have a webUI for that, and B2 is no different from Onedrive and G One.

there a reason why they did not make a Linux version of their backup app like for Windows/Mac cos people will just abuse their storage system by uploading TBs of data from NAS/file servers but what I am trying to say is there workaround for this so BackBlaze is still an attractive option for me.

has anyone tried to create one using a short depth rackmount 2 bay NAS drive?

I am having problems finding a suitable 1u short depth rackmount NAS case with 2 hot swappable drives.

Well, seems like you missed my earlier replies. I'm hosting my own personal media server hence these data are expandable for me even though I have about 20-30tb worth of data.

Hence, streaming is much more important for me. Anyway, I did say I'm open to trying out Google anyway.

Freenas allow you to change hdd to capacity expansion without lost the data?

like 4x3TB after that you change to 4X8TB.

You need to change and resilver one HDD at a time, if the capacity is different. It can be done.

Hi, what's the pros and cons of using FreeNAS vs regular NAS such as Synology/Qnap?

DIY NAS Project

Initially wanted to start a new DIY NAS thread, but just realized that I created one few years back (before I left for overseas work) in hardware clinic, so might as well use back this thread to share a home project of my new DIY NAS project using the updated TrueNAS Core.

Purpose of the NAS:
1) Run VMs
2) qbittorent download machine then Resync back to main NAS library
3) Replicate the nextcloud data and other server data on my main NAS
4) Sync to S3

The specs as below:
1) CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1245 v5 at TDP 80W
2) Mobo: Asrock Rack C236WSI
3) Chassis: OEM Supermicro storage chassis
4) Memory: Samsung DDR2133 2 x16GB ECC Ram
5) HDD: 4x existing HGST 2TB HDD (existing vdev)
6) HDD: 4x WD Red Plus CMR 8TB (new vdev)
7) boot drive: SSD Intel 240G (old drive)
8) NIC: 2x SFP+ Chelsio NIC (carry over)
9) Fans: 1x Noctua PWM 12cm, and 2x Noctua PWM 6cm
10) Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i

Old NAS to be upgraded:

I used to contemplate doing something like what TS is doing but due to time constraint and productivity now I rather pay US$12/month to Google GSuite Business (/w unlimited storage) then backup to BackBlaze Business backup to eliminate all these hassles.

But then it still a pleasure to watch how others are doing it, maybe when opportunity arises, I will relook and attempt this kind of setup. Thread subscribed.

10yrs ago, it's the trend to host nas@home... used to own a rack of servers and nas at my old house store room.

But with the floods of cloud computing, if you compare CAPEX+OPEX, it does not make any economic sense to do that at home... except for enthusiast...the only downside is internet outage, and how-to migrate 100 Terabytes of data back....

100 Terabytes !!
I only need 4TB to temporary store my files bc disk diagnostics give yellow warning. Then I'll thoroughly test that drive before deciding to buy a new one.
I have a few drives that I want to re-organise, remove old obsolete etc and free up space. I need the free space to re-organise.
I keep 2nd copies of important files on different drives, so maybe I'll use cloud service instead.
I also have more than 1TB of karaoke files, if store on cloud can klok at any friend's place:) But ahemm I wonder if can attract copyright scrutiny?

Nowadays can move files to cloud at more than 10MB/s, as fast as old thumbdrives. I only worry if my ISP M1 think that I'm over-using my unlimited quota, can attract copyright scrutiny? Then in future no more unlimited quota.

What service can provide free 4TB for a few months?
