I've been using Fujitsu SH560 (made in japan) for 4 years, the S$2.3k laptop works fairly ok except for a since day one strange system freeze problem which happens randomly if some usb device (including mouse) is not attached properly when used. I solved this by using a USB hub and attach all my devices to that hub. I sent it for servicing once for this reason, they replaced some speaker but didn't solve the issue.

Nonetheless, it didn't die - I replaced the WD HDD a year ago when some bad sectors appeared.

As my laptop is getting slow, I'm now researching for a replacement/backup laptop and also I want to use USB3 for faster backup - right now, Windows system backup takes like nearly 2 days.

4 years is a long time ago, and I don't know if Fujitsu's made in Japan quality has deteriorated. Has anyone used the new S or E series Fujitsu laptop?

I'm also looking at ASUS, especially the new commercial notebook. My only gripe is that ASUS is all Made in China and quality varies from model to model.

HDD is also very important, I will avoid Seagate and other less reliable HDD.

For application development use, spec not that important, but must be reliable as every single day of downtime is $$$.

Fujitsu still sell locally, but i don't think many people buy their made in japan laptop, as frankly, the spec is not that high end and costs a lot more than the big 4 brands - Fujitsu Notebooks Lifebook E734 UCHUC, E744 C5W81P, E754 C5W81P, S904UC B7W81-30 COMEX 2014 Price List Brochure Flyer Image

Yes, I also read about ASUS bad service. Bad service is one thing, most important the model must be reliable. Believe it or not, my previous HP lappy lasted me 7 years, I never even have to call their customer service once. But to be honest, the flap did have a problem - after 7 years of opening and closing, it is lose.

But then those were the good times when HP was reliable brand... :D

Are you using an SSD now?

I intend to upgrade to a 512GB Samsung SSD which actually is the same size as the WD HDD for my existing SH560. I read that Samsung had the lowest fail rate.

For reliability, why don't you consider business grade laptops?
There are Lenovo Thinkpads, HP elitebooks, and Dell latitudes to look into.

These are built with better quality products base on better designs.

Fujitsu is not really selling in Singapore now.

With regards to failure rates,

Consumer grade laptops, failure rates within 3 years is around 30.1% across all brands.
Business grade laptops failure rates are much lower around 12%.

Steer clear of Asus laptops, problems and poor after sales services will make your purchase a nightmare.
