I am looking to upgrade from my G73SW to another Entertainment system. My commitments makes me fly around the world, stopping by at a site for around 3-6 months and then move on to another site. A desktop is not an option for me while i still want to play games, especially newer games like watch dogs or star citizen,

I am looking around the price range of SGD 2k +- 500

I am eyeing on the G750JS at 2.2k at challenger with specs:

Intel® Core™ i7 4700HQ
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX870M 3GB GDDR5 VRAM
1TB 7200
8GB RAM
Windows 8.1

The Aftershock PC promoted here looks promising and might want to try out its XG17-V2 with these custom specs just under SGD2k:

Intel® Core™ i7-4710MQ
NVIDIA GEFORCE 860M GTX 2GB GDDR5
120GB SAMSUNG EVO SSD
1TB 5400
8GB RAM
Windows 8.1

(Might get a better CPU)

The Non-lit keyboard of the AS compared to the G750 Lit is abit lacking , but it is not such a bother. I have a Intel 330 120GB which i can bring forward from my G73sw to the new PC and use it as a secondary installation drive(XG17) or as a primary drive(G750).

I have gone out of the loop of the PC Sector as i do not have time to catch up(the last i was in the loop was when 9800 GTX was the best thing in the market :p )

Is there any other recommendations? Anyone with AS XG17-V2 can share their experiences?

if you're travelling, wouldnt really recommend a 17-inch. Especially not the Asus ones as they weigh a lot.

You should look for the 13 inch, 14 inch and 15 inch. For your budget, something like MSI, Razer or Gigabyte should be better for your traveling purpose.

I am not travelling with it, not in that sense. I will be placing it at one spot(my room) for 3-6 months and then move on to place it on another spot for 3-6 months. I do not need to lug it along wherever i go, therefore a 17 inch is viable as i like the 17 inch form factor for the 1080p.

It is fine for the plane trip as you dont really carry it alot, Home -> Airport -> Airport Trolley -> Check In -> Airport Trolley -> In plane -> Immigration -> Luggage Collection -> To site.

Less than 4 spots need to really carry on the back.

Both machine looks great in specs, but I would stand by Aftershock for its unsurpassed after sales service. Not too sure about Asus's notebook after sales service though...

AS you're traveling intermittently, international warranty would be more important. Asus has it, but not Aftershock.

Cant deny that, but i will be back in SG every year. Generally i use it as if i have none, one that last for at least 2 years is considered value for money. The warranty is not really a concern though, the specs however are quite competitive and i can push out abit more for the same price if i go for the AS option.

I suppose if yr overseas n it breaks down, u will really miss the warranty, unless u have a spare laptop. Machines are unpredictable n something can just go at the unexpected moment. Seems like u prefer AS which means u shd get tat, as long as yr mentally prepared wen things go wrong u need to wait to come bk sg to get it fixed.

let me share my experience with you. I own MSI gaming laptop, should be around same level of price/quality with ASUS. I encounter HDD problem within 10 month (still under warranty), screen issue after 1.5 years, and now power supply issue after close to 3 years.

All those components are off the shelf parts used by MSI. I dont think this is MSI's quality issue, its just simply how things are with electronic parts nowadays. At the end of the day its see your luck kind of situation.
I would suggest go with the one offering longest warranty coverage.

one thing to point out is the GTX870M and GTX860M are significantly different in terms of speed with the 870M significantly faster in terms of diff benchmark tests compared to the 860M.

If weight is not much an issue, dun need to do much customization, might be worth getting the Asus version instead which gives more bang for buck in terms of just looking at getting max graphics power.

MSI GT series can be consider as desktop replacement too.

Especially for the SteelSeries Multi colour backlit keyboard & the premium speaker - Dyanudio =:p

Look at the laptop, not the girl pls :D

I am having a similar dilemma. The Asus is crazy cheap as compared to other comparable models. During the IT fairs you can get it at about 2.2k without much bargaining. I think 2K is quite possible. Aftershock is a bit more expensive but you get slightly better hardware(4710 vs 4700) (intel 7260 wireless vs unknown Asus wireless) (IC diamond vs stock cooler)
Hope owners of these models can come here and give their thoughts.

From my opinion, I think the XG15 should suit your needs better. Understand that you don't lug it along often, but if there is a need to bring it out, then 15 inch should be a better bet. There is no compromise of specs from XG17 to XG15 anyway. You get a back lit keyboard on the XG15 with a choice of a better gamut monitor if you are particular about the monitor.

In terms of pricing, although it seems that both are quite close, the dif being,

Aftershock,
1) Faster CPU
2) Free SSD (which I believe you can opt out and get a discount)
3) Significantly better after sales service
4) Better upgradeability
5) Lighter

Asus,
1) Runs cooler
2) Faster GPU
3) 7200RPM drive vs 5400RPM on the Aftershock
4) 1st year international warranty

using asus G750 JX to replace desktop.

Really no regret. Very cool, fast (770MX), reliable and stable. Laptop connected to one TV using HDMI and monitor using Analog. Fuss free.

I am sure the JS version would be great.

Aftershock looks good too but the gfx card limited to 860m for the same price range.

Planning to replace my desktop with JS, due to space constraints, and use the laptop screen as a secondary display. Have to see aftershock's promotion next IT fair and decide then. Aftershock also has a possibility of ugradability so must take that into account.

The XG series won't have upgradeable graphics, you'll be stuck with its 860M all the way cos its soldered on.

Wish AS would have another series stuck between the XG17 and the dual gpu 17" series. I have seen the MSI GT70 Dominator with 870m also considered but its way out of my budget. The Asus is for unknown reason cheaper than others on the market. Probably going for the g750 unless someone has a better recommendation. Now wait for payday and prepare to burn wallet.....

Their X17S is the counterpart to the GT70. Aftershock has X and XG series both in 15.6" and 17.3" sizes.

Asus's ROG laptops all now use soldered-on GPUs instead of the removable and upgradeable MXM types so they cut some costs. it doesn't really matter anyway cos even in the past when they used MXM, their laptops are not designed to be upgrade-friendly.
