Change your motherboard. Why would you get a z series board if you dont intend to OC

Get msi gtx 970 gaming bah.

Was thinking about it. Read some reviews and all seems to favor the MSI GTX 970 more but I don't need an overclocking card and that could save me some $. I was thinking about the MSI GTX 970 LE version.

Then get MSI 970 OC/Armour version at $499 instead?

It has better components than the Palit and it is at 1.8-1.9 slots as compared to 2.5 slots for the Palit. Roughly $20 more expensive than it only.

If you comparing money value sense then 970 gaming or the 970 armor edition.

If you want more performance and uncapped 4gb VRAM then 390x is the next available upgrade rather than 390.

If he's running mid-end games, does he really require overclocking on his GPU?

Also, 4GB of VRAM, isn't it overkill if he just has a 1920x1200 (16:10) screen resolution trying to run it at 60fps?

I do not have any intention to OC and is GTX 970 sufficient to run battlefield 4?
