Personally, I feel Alienware products are really pricey, and you don't get the best bang for your bucks. If you are looking for a gaming laptop, look no further than Aftershock with its Clevo machines. For a laptop, I think they offer best value and after sales service. ;)

Although the appearance is quite dull, however the x17s makes up with better components for the same price. So its the choice between better parts in your lappy or a more 'flashy' outer appearance

I think you are wrong here. Alienware has hdmi in, msata cache and 2-3 HDD bays and inbuilt sound recon3d chip sound there is a big difference in quality or sound. We cannot really say which is better in terms of price ratio but more of quality. Alienware can do 3d or 120 hz screen on 17 inches too.

I just find it ironic why nobody consider msi machines. Its a beast and easier to carry.

Well for me personally I feel that alien ware laptops are a tad bit over priced even with the 3D screen. If a msata is installed on the alien ware, it makes it even more expensive at about 3.2k-3.5k which is not a small amount for normal peeps. Though I admit the quality of laptop is great :D

MSI laptops are beasts but the one thing I'm concerned about it is its chassis, it flexes a little when pressure is applied but other than that it's an awesome gaming laptop brand!

Unless those are dealbreaker features like you really need to use the HDMI-in or you like the design so much it becomes a must-have feature, i think it will still ultimately fall to price vs performance ratio thats where aftershock comes in. I dont think most people would buy such products based on how many "good-to-have-but-probably-won't-ever-use" features are found in the laptop. To this very day I have never used, nor will probably ever need to use the firewire port on my X15.

Haha yeah but i ever come across a crazy dude at a void deck outside his shop with an xbox hooked to his alienware m7xr3 playing xbox games. I cannot imagine that scenario like in east coast or picnic haha.

whatever laptop you buy, one main issue will that will always bug laptops (be it gaming or not, high end/low end internal parts, colour/design etc) is HEAT

since TS wants gaming laptop, and its gonna be 17" size, go for the one with thickest chassis. this can save u a few precious degrees celcius in heat management. many laptops their cooling system only has one fan (along with the heat pipes) to cool both cpu and gpu. unless u are sufficiently technically savvy enough to mod the chassis to improve the cooling system/heat pipes/fans etc.

Of all the 17 inch machines only the Toshiba Qosmio X875 and MSI GT70 employ single-fan. The other 17 inch gaming machines are all dual-fan, regardless of their thickness

best is dual/multiple fan and thick chassis

Thick chassis does not necessarily correlate to cooling performance cos not all of that thickness could be contribute to internal ventilation. The Asus ROG laptops for example owe much of their thickness to their hinge design and ergonomic slanted profile.

ideally what I think should matter is the fan performance plus the design of the external ventilation. My laptop for instance has 2 fans and is thick, yet gets bottlenecked in cooling by the CPU fan cos it isn't as powerful as the GPU fan.

for me its the otherway round...i dont need discrete graphics cos integrated graphics good enuf. i am wondering if aftershock is able to offer one without discrete gpu, but has a haswell chip (with the integrated HD4000), and then pool together both fans and the heatpipe system (originally meant for gpu and cpu) to concentrate on cooling the cpu alone. once that can be done, then i can eliminate the notion of a desktop completely.:):s13: cos right now, even with mini-itx form factor desktop, conceptual-domain-wise, i am still stuck with no choice but to have a desktop if i want to fully use the raw power of 4 cores along with low (50-60ish deg c) temperatures, despite already having eliminated the discrete graphics card from desktop domain

dont know how that's going to be done. you cant really 'pool together' 2 fans in a laptop to cool the cpu because its not as if you can connect the gpu fan to the cpu

They use separate heatsinks, and assuming your laptop lacks the discrete GPU, it would also lack the GPU heatsink (since there'd be no GPU physically there to attach the heatsink to), and the GPU fan becomes inactive. This is ultimately still a laptop and does not have the same freedom as a desktop to mod the cooling with aftermarket components

You can look at Aftershock's Halo if you need something that doesn't have a discrete GPU inside.
