I don't really game but kids love them.

SO due to Covid, STEAM and EPIC were installed.
Obviously my old system - HTPC in the living room gets converted into a gaming station.

it is a intel Core i5 2500k which the system 9 years old and still running. I had to do some parts change a bit but no major issues. The on-board grfx super out-dated so I went and buy a GTX 1650 Super to fill the gap.

After some a few weeks, I find majority of games work well and smooth on my simple Samsung 4K TV. (mid range one)

MY question now is, why are we still buying Ryzen and these RTX 2070...etc.?

I am planning a new Ryzen rig, just in case the i5 2500k works up again

i5 2500k to Ryzen 5 3600 is an upgrade? hmmm...

which games are u letting ur kids play? could be possible that default graphics settings are not as strenuous on the gpu as max settings, and that the resolution defaulted to 1080p. in such case, the 1650 super is adequate for smooth 60fps gameplay. it is also possible that those games are not cpu heavy, thus an old 2500k can handle it.

bottom line - if not demanding on quality or resolution, perfectly fine to stick to old hardware. ppl look for rtx and ryzen for more fps and higher resolution even on max settings. ryzen also has added benefit of productivity.

Agree with NightRaven, if the games they play are not demanding then might be best to make do with what you currently have. Can you share what games your kids are playing so that we can make an educated guess on future demands on hardware.

Ryzen is a better fit for a gaming/productivity RIG but if your hooked up to the TV then chances are it will only be use for gaming.

While it is true that it depends on what sorts of games your kids are playing, but the main reason in my opinion is that kids are not particular about the graphics. They probably appreciate the gameplay more than some shiny graphics. I feel your current rig is more than sufficient. If you do want to change the CPU, again if you can wait till Ryzen 4xxx to arrive later this year (I think ETA is Oct) then do wait. Otherwise, a Ryzen 5 3600 is good enough.

yes this a clear upgrade in perf, can be felt in use

if not urgent, can wait for 4600 zen3, add another 20% over 3600 zen2

Your old 2500k is still powerful enough today.
Intel has been sleeping for 8 years due to no competition from AMD.

Add GTX1650 is a good decision. Also look into having 8GB RAM onboard and a SDD. Good enough to game for a few more years.

I am just itching for the Ryzen 4000 series. AMD is surprisingly very quiet about it. No leaks at all.

Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit (Not Windows 10)

Some games run well but more modern will need a modern spec system.
Just my two cents the Geforce 1650 is equivalent to geforce 780 or so
at that time.

If you upgrade the PC which means CPU, mobo and RAM you can
squeeze more performance from the Geforce 1650.

I was suppose to retire the 2500k first but my Haswell i5 4690 kaput first. The MB just died. So last Sept I just got my current - Intel Core i7-9700.

my 2500k has been acting up every so often so I planned to move to Ryzen. Now I am a bit tempted to take the Ryzen for myself and transfer the i7-9700 to the living room hahahaha

Its a good idea. Plug the 1650 into the i7-9 and kids can play all demanding games. Then your kind self get Ryzen 4500/4700 with integrated GPU, u in BR, kids in LvRm, but still can team up, do some hunting/killing.
