Incumbent MPs Louis Ng, Carrie Tan and Derrick Goh announced today that they will be stepping down from Nee Soon GRC, a day after the PAP unveiled a fresh team there for GE2025.

Mr Ng, 46, is a two-term MP, while Ms Tan, 38, and Mr Goh, 57, have served for one term.

The PAP’s slate for Nee Soon GRC will include anchor minister K. Shanmugam and four new faces – Dr Syed Harun Alhabsyi, Mr Jackson Lam, Ms Lee Hui Ying and Ms Goh Hanyan.

One of the greatest honours of my life’: Louis Ng gets emotional as he talks about his decision to step down

Incumbent Nee Soon GRC MP Louis Ng was visibly emotional as he announced that he will be stepping down from politics.

“I’m stepping away, not because I stopped loving this job, really far from it, but being an MP has never just been a job for me. It’s been a calling, a deep privilege, and honestly, one of the greatest honours of my life,” he said.

Speaking to the media following a walkabout, Mr Ng was visibly emotional. At one point Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam helped him dab tears away. Mr Ng said he was leaving politics to spend more time with his three daughters.

“I share a lot about my daughters in my speeches in Parliament,” he said. “But the truth is, I’ve missed a lot of important milestones in their childhood.”

“It has been an incredible privilege serving as your MP and walking this journey together with you,” he added. “This privilege, this trust, is something that I have never taken lightly.”

Mr Shanmugam said that he and PM Lawrence Wong had “spent many hours” persuading Mr Ng to stay, but ultimately understood his reasons for stepping down.
