WP rally: Vote for the WP even if you are satisfied, says Michael Thng

WP Tampines GRC candidate Michael Thng urged voters to vote for the party even if they are satisfied with the performance of the PAP.

In his speech, Mr Thng focused on undecided voters, and said that one frequent reason he hears people give for voting for the PAP is that they are satisfied with the way things are.

“I know Singapore has come a long way. I think we all must be accepting and grateful of the journey that has taken us here,” he said. “But I think the question that we should ask ourselves isn’t whether we are satisfied. The question we should ask ourselves is whether we can imagine more for this country, whether we can imagine better.”

Saying that the PAP has run out of new ideas, he said: “What I think they need now, more than anything else, is just a little hammering away from the outside, right?”

His Tampines GRC teammate Ong Lue Ping, in turn, raised four pledges to make Tampines better: building stronger communities by championing more inclusive spaces, a more responsive town management, mental wellness, and being listening leaders.

“Singapore has come far. Let's bring it further. With kindness, with courage, with balance,” he said.

Workers' Party (WP) candidate for Punggol GRC Alexis Dang, who has been the subject of online comments focusing on her appearance, responded to a question on the issue. Speaking alongside her team at a walkabout in Punggol Central on Thursday (May 1), the 39-year-old said the candidates welcomed scrutiny and public attention as a group, because voters should understand who they are and what they stand for.

WP candidate Harpreet Singh also issued a stern warning for "the men out there", saying: "Those types of comments are unacceptable, and they must stop. We must respect women. They're absolutely, absolutely bright. We must, first and foremost see them as individuals." Get the latest #GE2025 updates: https://cna.asia/ge2025

WP rally: ‘We do not fight, shout or name-call in Parliament,’ says Gerald Giam

In his speech, Mr Gerald Giam, incumbent MP for Aljunied GRC, addressed three fallacies he said voters may have heard during the election period: The first, that having a stronger opposition would weaken the Government. The second, that more opposition representation would mean more fighting in Parliament. And the third, that the opposition is "only talk".

On the first, he noted that the WP is contesting just 26 seats, and even if they won them all, PAP would still have a supermajority.

On the second, he said that the WP debates responsibly in parliament.

"We do not fight, shout or name-call in Parliament, we debate with facts and logic. Yes, debates may last longer, but that's how ministers are held accountable and how policies are improved," he said, adding that even with a stronger WP presence, PAP will be able to pass any law or constitutional amendment.

"What a stronger Workers Party gives you is better scrutiny and a more responsive government."

On the third point, Mr Giam said that WP MPs have punched above their weight in the last five years, with more than 2,300 parliamentary questions asked, 45 bills and motions debated, and clarifications sought on 34 ministerial statements.

“This is what you get when you elect a serious, responsible opposition. Now we are ready to do more.”

A man momentarily fainted at the WP rally on Thursday, temporarily pausing proceedings.

As Hougang SMC candidate Dennis Tan was addressing supporters at Anderson Serangoon Junior College, the crowd suddenly began shouting “medic, medic, medic”, pointing to a man who had lost consciousness.

On the stage, Mr Tan paused his speech: “I think there's an emergency over there to just pause for a while. We have time tonight.”

The man was conscious when he was led out..
