Hi everyone!

Would like to check if anyone done any Genetic Screening test in Singapore? My husband and I are thinking of doing it with our son.

Care to share your experience? All suggestions and advice will be greatly appreciated. :s12:

Have grandparents on both ends that had cancer and diabetes. Just wondering if there are any services that are recommended in Singapore.

Genetic screening is most recently being performed in non-invasive manner where 2ml of saliva is taken from you. They basically sequence over 20,000 genes to look for hundreds of genetic predispositions to inherited diseases.

This will be give you a better idea what you and your family might be up against. You can then take measures to make sure that the health conditions do not totally manifest itself by managing your family's lifestyle.

Nothing can beat bad genes, there is no cure, so just live life and not worry about the death sentence hanging over you.

My hubby was considering doing this very seriously, he says that it is a form of preventive care. Know better than don't know. Like if you had cancer would you not want to know? Would you rather just suddenly drop dead and die one day?

For me, I just more scared insurance policies will be eventually based on genetic screening results. Like if you have a current medical condition, you have to declare. Then this one leh? Now no rules, but in the future what if all need to declare?

Better not to do isn't it? How will you be able to buy insurance or keep it from your insurance companies? What if you kenna the disease then the insurance company don't payout because you already knew that you were genetically predisposed?

Ignorance if truly bliss for such matters.

If you husband is afraid, it is best to buy better insurance coverage. Knowing what you are genetically predisposed to does not mean that you are able to prevent it also.

Live a healthy lifestyle, eat well and exercise regularly - at the end of the day, it's the quality of life that matters, not how long you live.
