Genting Malaysia Plans Theme Park Tie-Up With Fox

Hotel and resort operator Genting 3182.KU -0.20% Malaysia Bhd. and Twentieth Century Fox, the film studio behind "Life of Pi" and "Ice Age," plan to launch an outdoor theme park as part of a 3 billion ringgit ($938.1 million) overhaul of Malaysia's only casino resort.

The complex would be Twentieth Century Fox's second foray into branded theme parks, following a failed attempt in Australia more than a decade ago. For Genting Malaysia, the project is part of a major face-lift of Genting Highlands, its 42-year-old hilltop resort that draws more than 20 million visitors annually.

Genting Malaysia, a unit of casino giant Genting Bhd, will shut an existing outdoor theme park at the resort to make way for the construction on the new project that will feature up to 30 rides and attractions based on Fox franchises including "Alien" and "Rio." The Fox theme park is expected to open in 2016, and will cost about $125 million to build.

Lim Kok Thay, chief executive of Genting, said he plans to add 1,300 rooms and explore other developments and refurbishments for the resort.

"The 3 billion ringgit is just a ballpark figure, and we expect it to climb," he said.

Mr. Lim, who is also chairman and CEO of Genting Malaysia, expects revenue to grow between 8% and 12% this year as some of its developments begin to mature. Genting is refurbishing its London casinos and expanding in North America, where it is slated to open its Resort World Bimimi project in the Bahamas in the third quarter this year.

Genting is also seeking to restart the initial public offering of its Travellers International Hotel Group Inc. in the Philippines once market conditions are right, Mr. Lim added. The IPO that could have raised as much as $970 million was postponed earlier this month.

Mr. Lim also said Genting is awaiting approval to raise its stake in Australia-listed Echo Entertainment Group Ltd. to more than 10% as part of the company's "portfolio investment."

Last month, Genting Hong Kong Ltd., 0678.HK +1.19% which Mr. Lim also runs as chairman and chief executive, disclosed that it amassed 6.6% stake in Echo, just a few weeks after billionaire James Packer's Crown Ltd. CWN.AU 0.00% sold its stake in its Australian rival.

Genting Malaysia is optimistic that its latest project with Fox will double the number of visitors from three million people each year to the existing park. The move will also reduce its dependence on casino business in Malaysia—where gambling is outlawed for Muslims, who make up 61% of the population, according to Pew Research.

For Fox, the Malaysia project marks the studio's second attempt at the theme park business. Fox launched Fox Studios Backlot in Sydney, Australia, in 1999. That park, which was part of a $261 million development that included film and television studios, was closed in 2001 because of poor attendance.

Twentieth Century Fox is a unit of 21st Century Fox, FOX -1.61% which until late June was part of the same company as Wall Street Journal owner News Corp NWSA -2.39% .

"This is a growing market and it is important for us to be here," said Jeffrey Godsick, president of Fox's consumer products.

Fox has maintained its presence in the lucrative business by licensing its most popular films to other theme-park operators, including those owned by competing film studios. In 2011, the company licensed the rights to Avatar to Disney DIS -0.57% to create rides based on the movie. And Universal Studios has developed an attraction based on Fox's animated sitcom The Simpsons.

"It's a new relationship between Fox and Genting…it wouldn't be a surprise if it grows beyond Malaysia," Mr. Godsick said.

Asia's rising middle class is fueling a boom in the region's theme-park business. Last year, attendance at Asia's theme parks rose 6% to 109 million visitors, outpacing the 3% growth in North America. While attendance in North America was still greater at 131 million, the consulting firm expects Asia to surpass with the coming launch of Shanghai Disney in 2015 and continued growth at popular parks in Hong Kong and Tokyo.

saw the above news in the papers already. nowhere did it mention the current theme park will be closed, and when it will be officially closed. the news about it closing has been going on for sometime, but there is no exact date or official notice anywhere. not even on the genting website itself.
