Hi Guys, I'll be getting a laptop for my uni, but I have no idea what spec should I get for my laptop.

My friends from engineering diploma suggest I should get dell inspiron 7k series, so I'm actually looking on Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming laptop, which fits my budget under $2k, but I'm still open up to more suggestion before I decide on getting one.

The cheapest 7000 series is $1399 currently, the specs looked decent but it states promo ends on 31may.

And does your school have their laptop offers?
Any information about software used for modules?
Also, You have any old laptop?

Suggest you factor in the weight of the laptop as well because you will be carrying it around alot. Best to buy from upcoming IT Show, Uni laptop sale not worth unless you're buying Mac.

If can get one with SSD/SSHD will be better. I'm currently using Dell Inspiron 5447 for Uni.

Not worth buying gaming laptop, unless you are staying in the hostel and really want to play AAA games. Otherwise just get decent laptop about $1000-1200, remaining money save to build desktop to game :s22:

If your uni got sell Thinkpad offerings, go for that. My uni carries Thinkpads at prices not obtainable at retail.

I personally went for Dell's flagship Latitude because of aftersales anecdotes, but Thinkpads frankly have a superior keyboard and trackpoint experience.

Go ur school see got want student offers. Frankly, they are quite attractive. For school, weight is important, so gaming laptop is not recommended

Schools can get EPP price for some laptop vendors including Lenovo which are pretty aggressive on promoting to educational institutions.

Compared to gaming laptops, they're still more expensive.

There are both P series (formerly w series) mobile workstation models and quadro mobile cards and also office machine spec like T series thinkpads.

For dell, the workstation brand is dell precision. The workstation brands carry more ISV certification hence the price premium.

Intel HD Graphics 620

Intel SoC (System on Chip) platform

Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265
Bluetooth 4.1 wireless, integrated in Wi-Fi + Bluetooth combo adapter
Wireless WAN upgradable
Ports: 3 UBS 3.0 (one Always On), USB Type C, MiniDP, HDMI, Ethernet, Dock connector
HD720p resolution, low sensitive, fixed focus camera
Internal Speakers
6-row, spill-resistant, multimedia Fn keys
Trackpoint pointing device and buttonless crystal silk surface multi-touch
touchpad
TPM, TCG 1.2-compliant
Front Li-Polymer 3-cell (23Wh) and rear Li-on 3-cell (36Wh), both integrated
Windows 10 Professional OS
USB Optical Wheel Mous
Lenovo HDMI to VGA Monitor Adapter
ThinkPad Ultra Slim USB DVD Burner
3Yr on-site Next Business Day + Keep your Drive + Sealed Battery1st 3 years International Warranty (included in base warranty)

This is offered by nus for ~$1500. As compared to some of the other ultrabooks that im considering like acer swift 3, hp envy 13, asus zenbook ux 410/430, this thinkpad is around $200-$300 more. I have never used a thinkpad before so I would like to know if its worth the price difference.

Thanks

Needs more RAM.

But yes Thinkpads are great! Reliable & tough.

Price is good, storage is limited. But if you want to make good comparison between these,

T470 vs. T470s
-FHD vs. Up to 2k
-Hot swappable battery (23WHr internal + up to 72WHr removable) vs 49WHr sealed
-More ports vs less
-Slightly heavier vs slightly lighter
-2 memory DIMMs vs. 1 onboard +1 DIMM

Overall if you're looking to stick with 1 laptop throughout the course of your study then take the non s model. Battery life does degrade over time and there's a lot less headroom which is typical in all standard ultrabooks.

To balance out the specs, do not rule out the i5 option available. You can use the savings from getting an i5 to purchase a removable 72WHr 6 cell (atop of the sealed in 3 cell 23WHr) for a total of ~95WHr. That's about double of what you can find on the s model. Battery life is important, especially if you'd like to stay unplugged for long hours with limited power sockets available in the public.
