hmmm I believe you would have about 2k budget right? I suggest you wait for haswll cpu to come out before purchasing lappy since NUS will only commences on august.

based on the reference notebook of hasell, it is basically a combination of tablet and lappy which is very convenient but heavy.

NUS CS has no provision for you to MUST have a laptop to start with. You can always do your work in the provided laboratories, which I was there very frequently all the time.

Laptop is seriously convenience. Although I have been using Apple for more than 10 years, I don't find Microsoft Windows less relevant. Both works in your work. But my personal experience is I can achieve unix related tasks much easier in Apple Mac OS X than in Microsoft Windows.

But given today's technologies using virtual machines and having your own low cost cloud virtual servers, there is no reason to believe which platform is more relevant.

totally agree with david. u can get a windows.... and when u come to NUS computing, u will know why getting a mac is a gd beginning haha... I do all my development on mac these days... but i think microsoft visual studio is probably one of the best IDE ... but i personally prefer light weight editors like vim.

You will find no lack of advices each siding towards each platform. Getting either will not render it useless, just one may have advantage over another in certain aspect. Important is you are comfortable with it. Follow your heart.

If you can't be flexible in learning, you wouldn't be a good developer. Mark my words on this. :)

Buy what you are comfortable with.

I've seen PC users convert to Mac. And Mac users convert to PC. Both sides happy.

I do have to say I see more people very passionate about their Macs as compared to Windows. It's quite normal because Macs remain a tiny proportion of the market.

Smaller crowds have a more passionate following if you look at tech in general. (not just OSes).

As for CS/IS, I am not from either disciplines but I do know some NUS student developers (11). All of them are on Windows. Do note that in the US, most developers seem to be on Macs.

Nope. I'm not here to push any OS. I'm here to offer an observation from what I have seen relevant to what OP is asking. :)

You have your opinions about OS X and I respect that.

It is not seem to be. It is true that most uses mac. In US, Mac is the most commonly used laptop in the school. If u wanna know why, becuz most computing courses require u to know unix system/commands. And mac being an unix system, its a perfect candidate. However, there are people who just use linux. if u dunno them, its as gd as u have nvr attended a computing course.

Fully understand :)

I am not a CS/IS student and I was only posting my observations from a sample. I made sure to declare the sample size as well for clarity. For US Mac users, the words 'seem to' mean that I am not sure.

Relax! :s13:
