1st pic is using reference cooler.

2nd pic uses non-ref/custom cooler from individual brands.

First pic is the reference(default) cooler used by nvidia, you wont see this on AMD cards if im not wrong. IMO the airflow for this isn't very good so most ppl get ones with custom coolers like the MSI twin frozr for example

hi quick check on the external appearance of discrete gfx cards:

this "style" where there is a sleek, minimalist nice "boxy" enclosure covering most portions of the pcb, with a hole showing the fan, is there a name for it? does sls sell this style of cards? does this boxy style exist for old old very low end ones eg gt8800? an example of the "boxy" style is as shown:

on the other hand, the more commonly existing "style" is this type which shows many exposed regions of the pcb and a fan sitting on top. a very typical example as shown:

This is called BLOWER type.

And this is called OPEN type.

Many people would refer BLOWER type as reference cooler since both Nvidia and AMD use this type of cooling design extensively over many of their mid-high end reference models. However, not ALL reference coolers are BLOWER type, notably those on the lower-end and HD 7990.

ah noted thanks for the good info
so...what is the most low end reference boxy style one sold in sls or by corbell/pc themes/nigel's 2nd floor shop/whatever friendly supplier? lol thanks cos just want something that looks asthetically pleasing thats all . my gfx needs are very minimal

FYI when the card is mounted its kinda upside down on a conventional ATX casing so you can't really see the cooler. Unless you got an inverted ATX or the weird 90 degree ATX silverstone case.
