GFX cards at SLS

The prices of graphics cards are dropping due to being less useful for mining. So I am slowly looking around to replace my old GTX460.

Some time ago I was browsing some shops in SLS, and in one shop (I forgot the name, but I will remember when I go there again) I noticed they had a few graphics cards in a mining rig in the back. I'm afraid that they will put those graphics cards back in their original packaging after mining for months and selling them off as new.

Am I being paranoid, or is this really happening? And if so, is it all shops at SLS? If it is happening I guess it would more likely be with the higher spec cards, so a GTX1060 should probably be safe bet. I could always inspect the contacts for wear, I suppose.

Any comments would be appreciated!

I doubt so. But if u are going to buy from them. Take out and inspect all corners of the GPU. See the seal is is broken or miss align.

Anyway if u can wait for the new 1100 series to come out and buy, then do that. Cos maybe the GTX 106 might be even cheaper?

You are paranoid but I can't blame you. Coz if certain shop is going to put old card to sell as new after sealing them, you won't know either.

But most cards in sg, won't allow the user to remove cooler and clean the heatsinks. There will have a sticker at one of the cooler mounting screw, which only distributors have the stickers. So chance of tempered is lowered there, though not impossible.

Anyway, the cards will have the warranty as stated. 2-5 years depending on brands and models. Using beyond the warranty period means the product have served its life. Any longer is a bonus to you, though most products tends to serve longer than their warranty period. If you get a product (mined or not), and it died right after warranty period, simply means you are unlucky. Luck plays a big part in electronics I gotta say.

If you worry, buy through lazada or shopee, those with return policy. Any issue that you deem the products received were tampered before, you can escalate the matter to their feedback channel and return them/get a replacement.

Lastly, gtx 11 series launching this year. Think you might need to know this, that's all.

More likely that the cards end up on the second-hand market as "BNIB" cards rather than sold in the shop since I would assume the shop would want to protect their reputation.

A little WD40 and heat gun could do the trick to pull out the warranty stickers.

But most cards in sg, won't allow the user to remove cooler and clean the heatsinks. There will have a sticker at one of the cooler mounting screw, which only distributors have the stickers. So chance of tempered is lowered there, though not impossible.

Also from an UNRELIABLE source:
Tiagong some vendors mine and RMA these cards. That’s the explanation that the cards are not in their original packaging.

From what I see, most miners don't even have the box anymore lol, only provide photocopy of receipt

Box is just a waste of space if you have a lot of cards...
