My mid-2012 retina MacBook Pro's screen had this serious ghosting issue. It got worse with time. My MacBook is covered under AppleCare. Is screen ghosting considered a defect and can I get the screen replaced as part of AppleCare warranty?

As per Avoiding image persistence on Apple displays - Apple Support

On an IPS display, when an image such as a login window is left on screen for a long period of time, you may temporarily see a faint remnant of the image even after a new image replaces it. This is referred to as "persistence," "image retention," or "ghosting." This is normal behavior for an IPS display, and the faint image will disappear over time.

I've seen displays replaced for image retention but problem reoccurs, not sure how critical your situation is, drop a call to AppleCare to have a Senior Advisor have a look an investigate the issue.

Remember the saying "Don't fix what's not broken", it might just create more problems.

I have the same issue on my mid 2012 retina MBP. what ever it is, call up Apple support first. They will assist you in some soft reset(I think its the standard diagnostic check) If whatever they suggest can't help with the image retention(ghosting issue) you will be direct to local service centre to have the screen replace.
