GHz or cores?

Looking at the Comet Lake lineup I saw two CPUs that are the same price:

Intel Core i5-10400 14nm+++ 6/12 3.0 GHz 4.4 GHz UHD 730 12 MB 65W $179 US
Intel Core i3-10350K 14nm+++ 4/8 4.1 GHz 4.8 GHz UHD 730 9 MB 91W $179 US

If looking at base clocks (I've never seen my CPU run at single-core turbo, and Intel has removed all-core turbo clock info on new products),

3.0GHz single core 18GHz total
vs
4.1GHz single core 16.4GHz total

Which one would you take?

3.0GHz just doesn't feel enough nowadays... especially when many software are still getting capped at 2 to 4 threads

Fwah, really? Then why so many ppl chiong 6-8 cores i.e. 12-16 threads?

Can list the software capped at 4 threads and under? How to check software thread limitation?

Depends whether your software is more sensitive to clock speed or multi-thread cores.

You could also consider AMD although Intel still have the slight edge when it comes to IPC.

Regret? Skylake 6400 was released at $182 in August 5, 2015, took Intel 4 years and all they give is HT at the same price.

8400 with 6 scores sold for $182 too. And that one has an all-core turbo at 3.8GHz
9400 at $182 has all-core turbo at 3.9GHz

So 10400 better have an all-core turbo at 4.0GHz. So all you get for 4 years of wait is the HT.

Why?

$179 would get you an AMD RYZEN 7 2700 8-Core 3.2 GHz (4.1 GHz Max Boost). Plus, the motherboards are backwards compatible, you don't need to keep buying new mobo.

I would wait for more benchmarks before deciding.

Also, someone reviewed that you need 8 threads to run all games on market for maximum performance.

cores and threads are one thing but also really depends on the cpu architecture especially if you are comparing intel and amd

I believe Intel removed the all core turbo information for quite sometime now. The difference is between a K and non K part, which explains the significant difference in clockspeed with the K chip getting a 50% bump in TDP. I feel I will still go for a higher core chip since it will benefit my video encoding. So it depends on your usage
