In my opinion, the OEM may or may not be the party at fault here. And even if so, they may be partially to blame. Usually the companies buying from the OEM have some say in the component choice to either make it better or worst. Considering this Gamers Nexus also noticed that the components are sourced from multiple manufacturers, all the more I feel it may be a result of cost cutting by Gigabyte.

Gigabyte has recently gone down in the last year and half or so. From bios updates to doing nothing about their software support, now it seems trickling down to hardware. Boards still not too bad but bios/software is something they just can't get right until today.

Thats why i always stick to Seasonic for psu, since its one of their core products.

Used to love the Silverstone Strider series, BUT they have since changed manufacturer. The Silverstone lasted more than 10 years, kept in storage because the 850W is struggling due to age.

I see two reasons for the cries people are making: One is the poor quality and unknown manufacturer, which I wun and can't comment since I didn't do a price check, and the other is the 150% OPP.
While the engineer in me is on the fence about this because this is a design decision, I strongly doubt people are blowing their PSU due to that because that would mean a similarly large number of users of other brands would see their PSU shut down while doing stuff because they trip a lower opp e.g. 120%. But we don't.

I believe the 120% shut down is the by product of trying to find out the issue about the PSU. GN did mentioned that they bought the units because consumers were complaining of lots of DOA or psu dying within few months of usage. Its just that when they tested it at such load, the psu shuts down which is against what gb spec-ed them out to be.

Perhaps the in-depth look by Gamers Nexus should explain. I think most people don't have the time nor money to procure so many units for testing. But GN did mentioned that in one test where he ran the system with a normal load, and it failed in about 72 hours. The PSU is garnering a lot of negative reviews on all platforms for a reason, and that happened even before GN started this in depth testing. There are other reviews of similar PSU, for example, TechpowerUp, that also revealed that this PSU "exploded" during their testing. If other PSUs are not experiencing "explosions", to me it just feels that there is something fundamentally wrong with the Gigabyte PSU.

so what's the main issue?

for a PSU to have over 50% one-star reviews and consistent reports of either DOA or dying after a few hours it is indeed pretty concerning.
