Singapore has enjoyed success throughout the years of Lee Kuan Yew and beyond. People from outside Singapore maybe puzzled why a country that has achieved so much and has one of the highest per capital in the world, has so much unhappiness in some of the people? Countries elsewhere are having high unemployment rate, poverty and political instability.
Yet the highly stabilised government that has delivered success, are battling rising opposition. This run contradictory against the normal logic of rising success of government should not give rise to growing opposition. Why this is so?
The simple reason of disconnection that people felt with the government. People wants to know that the government understands them. People do not want the lip service of telling them that they are understood. People wants sincere actions.
As with everything, if government give in to every demand of the people, of coz chaos would arise.
The key is moderation, the Policies besides reflecting the macro view of the Singapore economic foresight and pragmatic approach, there is a need to project the same kind of considerations should be given to policies that project on enhancing people's lives. In economic, there is helicopter view of talent, long term vision and short term goals. In the people, there should be considerations of end-to-end, how to put in place infrastructure to support higher productivity and yet maintains work life balance. There should be studies done on other success countries on how can this be achieved. Giving monetary award to try to sway people to the desired goals has limited effect when the husbands/wives are working super long hours that are now affecting family life, needless to say having children. Is there any health/exercise initiative in work place to promote the health of the working people so that the government has less hospital beds to worry about and less expense on health care?
As in every success stories, the long term of Singapore depends on both the government and the people. Only through garnering support from the people, can the government continue to push long term goals with vision to put singapore in a better place than before. This may need the party to go back to its roots where it projects sincerity to the people that it really wants to bring singapore to be a better place, the party battling against all odds, able to make singapore a better place like today.
To win over the people, the party may need to go back to its roots to win the people over once again to continue the success of singapore again. This is just my two cents worth, please ignore this if you think the above is rubbish coz all this just my personal thinking only.
