My monitor supports DVI and DP, and I have DP and HDMI on the PC side. The problem is that I have DVI and HDMI cables, no DP.

Should I:
a) buy a DP cable. (more expensive option)
b) buy an adaptor (which type?).

Note that my monitor is 1920x1200. Not going to 1440 in the near term.

The annoying part for me is the price of DP cables, and likelihood of having to run down to SLS (again!).

Price of DP cables isnt that ex... I got 1 at $10 from ebay, works fine. U could get it cheaper. Maybe try finding with t258jgn.

ALso, if u alrdy gt DVI, just use DVI lor... Unless u r outputing sound from monitor to your speakers, then u need hdmi or DP.

I'm using onboard and the mobo doesn't have DVI (only HDMI and DP). I can't use HDMI because my U2412M doesn't have HDMI.

Ah, then get DP cable lor. Its a good investment.. Besides, it only costs $10 +/-. Doubt you cant afford it bah. Can be used when u get new gpu also..

I switched back from DP to DVI.

I am used to powering off my monitor while leaving the PC running. Doing that on DP will mess up the window sizes and positions because Windows detected that the monitor was "unplugged". DVI does not have the same problem. Happens with both GTX570 and GTX780 on Dell 2713H.

If you tend to use your PC in the same way like I do, then you can probably get a DVI-> HDMI or HDMI-> DVI adapter depending on which cable you want to use.

Going to DP need some research first, if you have a intel 530 ssd, using a non certified DP cable (cables with the 20th pin CONNECTED) will caused the ssd not to show up at all during cold boot.

Some people reported that the monitor will not wake up. Lights from peripherals and case fan still spinning when pc is shut down. All due to using a non certified cable.

Certified DP cables are not cheap either that you can try modding the cable/connector.

Yeah, I saw a thread on Anandtech on the non compliant DP cables, with the pin 20 issue. Compliant cables are probably in the range of $30+. What a ripoff.

I suggest staying with DVI or dual link DVI if possible.

I tried HDMI and DP. Both are horrible at input lag. Maybe its the implementation of my U2410 but using DVI produces the least amount of input lag especially when gaming.

Also as someone has posted, DP has some problems remembering window sizes and some graphics cards are finicky with DP and HDMI.

I feel DVI is still the best although I am sad its obsolete already.

What is 'input lag' or how to detect 'input lag'?

I use two DVI--> HDMI converter on my GTS250 & output to a monitor & a TV. Should I have 'input lag'?

Input lag will occur when there are circuitry involved in processing or post processing the image before the signal is displayed on the monitor.

You can find out more by reading this article.

AnandTech | Exploring Input Lag Inside and Out

Linus Tech Tips posted this video and talked a little about input lag.

I am getting confused by the active and passive converters needed.

If I get a male HDMI, female DVI adapter, a passive adapter will work because the signals are just rerouted, correct?

If I get a male DP, female DVI adapter, I will need to get an active converter, since the DP signal must be converted to the DVI compatible signal?

need to see your displayport is DP or DP++

Q: I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T500 laptop with a female DisplayPort out. My HDTV has only HDMI input, so I have a HDMI cable from the TV, connected to a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adaptor which connects to the laptop. I can get the video on the TV from the computer, but not the audio. What do I need to do? I thought HDMI and DisplayPort transmitted both audio and video signals.

A: HDMI signaling is an optional DisplayPort++ feature that a manufacturer may or may not implement. DisplayPort adapters merely pass through DVI or HDMI signal from the PC. It is recommended that you read the product specifications on the packaging and also contact the manufacturer prior to purchasing a PC or graphics card to ensure that the product supports DP++ with HDMI signaling.

FAQ | DisplayPort

In short, if your's is DP++ can just get a passive adapter.
