Who is assuming way too much and bringing in a host of irrelevant factors.
Irrelevant to you perhaps. Don’t assume the original poster is ”crazy.” He/she simply wants to buy U.S. Treasuries, and that’s often a perfectly sensible thing to do.

Who is assuming way too much and bringing in a host of irrelevant factors. If you are buying for purpose of visiting Disney Land for example, I got no say. Even if you are buying on hunch that USD is likely to go up, I got no say :flash: No need to add to a partial list of garbage
Precisely. Am just reading your post as telling people everybody circumstances are different.

the circumstances that apply to one does not necessary mean it applies to you, so you got to make your own call.

Don’t see how you are assuming anything, sounds like BBCW is the one assuming all the time

It seems like you are the one assuming though?

Why would/should anyone assume a U.S. Treasury shouldn’t be purchased in a thread asking how to purchase a U.S. Treasury? The title of this thread is literally “Going To Try US-T Bills”!

If the thread title were, “Going To Try Drinking Hemlock,” OK, maybe a long discussion about the merits of drinking hemlock is in order. These are U.S. T-Bills! They’re literally the world’s most popular bills in the world’s most popular currency. Not exotic by any stretch for the Money Mind forum. They have many great uses. So why assume a U.S. T-Bill isn’t merited?

Doing what you usually do.

say someone create a thread to say they going to invest $1k into a very fantastic investment opportunity that someone online is suggesting will provide guaranteed return of $1mil in 10 days.

Is it unexpected for others to provide warning to the thread starter about what they are going into?

OK, but that’s not this thread. This is a U.S. T-bill, the world’s #1 most popular and boring debt instrument. And I mean that in a good way. This is literally the #1 safest available parking place for the #1 most convertible currency available.

Warning about what? Currency risk vis a vis a Singapore dollar-oriented real lifestyle? OK, check, that’s one sentence (and rather obvious). That’s it. There is no safer place to park U.S. dollars.

Obviously you have gone out of the way to the extent that you now imagine that I assume the poster is crazy :s13: TBT

You can have that opinion, but that doesn't make your opinion the only opinion to consider.

warning about the scam in that specific scenario i just provided.

I am not suggesting US-T is a scam, but as mentioned, the circumstances of one does not apply to all

No, not unless you have a record of tax delinquency with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (and thus are subject to mandatory tax withholding) or are a tax resident of some jurisdiction where withholding applies. Those are rare exceptions among residents of Singapore.

U.S. Treasuries individually held (i.e. not within a fund “wrapper”) are U.S. tax free when held by a non-U.S. person.
Do you know if it's taxed when held by a non-US domiciled funds? E.g. IB01 and the like.

Or if it's held by invesment holding company e.g. Singapore domiciled pte ltd?

How more ludicrous can it be. It reminds me of LHL saying 'it's the right thing to do'
It's ok to feel overwhelmed by someone giving good advice. It's another to come up with stupid replies and mislead in a thread for the sake of commenting.
Don't contribute if you have minimal financial knowledge. Simi trx charges, trouble beneficiary need to go through knn. Do you even have an IB account?

You appeared awed by his mumbo jumbo and you yourself contributed nothing with your comment. I don't give advice like it is often a perfectly sensible thing to do. I only prompted poster to look out for issues that he may not be aware in going for ikan bilis in an ocean far away. Having IB is another kind of risk. You need more than financial knowledge :s13: I commented his posts because he too imaginative and superfluous to cloud the issue.

I did a search. If not wrong, the US-T on IBKR are all past auctions for trading. I think the liquidity would be very low. Any guide on low fee bank TRX to buy on treasury direct.com?

Do you mean treasury direct.gov? You need a SSN and some other US stuff to register an account.

If you can open such an account, you should buy Series I bonds which pay over 9% currently.

I have surveyed a few of them. The bid ask spread can be 2% difference. Kind of no point buying at low discount of 1+% where Singapore T-Bills are offering 3+%. Any recommendation which one is good?

Foreigners can buy from Treasurydirect.gov but I am not exactly sure of the details to register. Who can help?

So for foreigners, is it restricted to institutions only? https://www.quora.com/How-can-people-from-a-foreign-country-buy-U-S-Treasury-bonds

"As an individual unless you are extremely wealthy, it will be impossible to buy treasury bonds directly as a foreigner. Minimum trade size is often $1M."

True?

You can go to treasury direct.gov and attempt to sign up. Within 60 seconds you will find the answer.

You will be asked for a SSN, a US address and banking details. Without such things, there is no way to proceed.
