simply gtx860m Maxwell is way better than gtx950m, even if 950m is newer.
And both are Maxwell architecture, meaning 860m got the same efficiency with the newer chips. But just make sure its the Maxwell version, most likely newer laptops with 860m are Maxwell.

it is comparable with gtx960m, just a sightly lower clocked version.

was looking for a low budget gaming laptop for my son

ASUS X550JX - S$1298,
Intel Core i7-4720HQ processor
Win 8.1
8GB RAM, 1 TB HDD
GTX950M 4GB DDR3
DVD-RW
15.6" FHD LED
2 years Int warranty

Asus X751LK - S$1198

Intel Core i7-5500U(2.4Ghz, Turbo 3.0Ghz, 4M cache)
8GB DDR3 RAM
1TB S-ATA HDD
GTX850M, 2 GB
17.3" FHD LED Display
DVD drive
2 years Int warranty

Which will be better?

he is currently using
ASUS Core i7 with integrated video card, so this upgrade is good enough
He plays league of legends and call of duty online with his friends, the new specs should be more than enough

any other laptop to recommend in the same price range?

My son just asked to buy him a new gaming laptop.

I'm looking at under $1800. Between MSI gp60 ,Aftershock SM15/GP15,Gigabyte p15fv3 & ASUS(haven't found a model yet), which is a better choice? Considering Price vs Durability(warranty) vs Playability..

What's the difference between Aftershock SM15 vs GP15, price diff only $30?

Thank you & pls forgive my noob with gaming laptops

Which is the GP 15 laptop? I can't seem to find it. Is it the gigabyte P15Fv3 you're comparing the SM 15 to?

Aftershock's SM15 - GTX 960m - $1729
MSI GP 60 - GTX 950m - $1699
P15Fv3 - GTX 950m - $1599

Price point, gigabyte would be more affordable. Gaming wise, Aftershock's SM 15 features a higher end graphics card. I own the SM15 and can vouch that it runs most/all games smoothly. The freebies you're getting from aftershock is also a plus point. (gaming mouse, gaming headset, etc) Aftershock also provides lifetime thermal compound repasting and servicing which goes to show how good their support is.

I guess that model is exclusively for gamepro booth.

What I can spot is the wireless card is Intel 3160 ac for GP 15
For SM 15 they provide Killer 1525 ac which is a better card.

For GP 15 they're giving a free color change of the base of the laptop but the other freebies like mouse and headset aren't included.

If I were you I'd still go for the SM 15 over GP 15.

That's a very sound suggestion! Thanks.

Between Aftershock vs MSI, which should I go for?

It actually depends on your son. If he would want the steel series keyboard and the premium feel branding of MSI, go for it.

I would prefer my laptop to be as future proof for gaming as possible, goes to say the GTX 960 would give better performance for gaming compared to GTX 950 in the long run. And Aftershock's laptop is already a solid enough laptop for me. Bought it in the previous PC show and it's been a beast of a laptop :)
