Google Backup Service Bug on Android

Hi Guys,
I've recently stumbled on this annoying bug so I'd like to share it with you guys with possible workaround until Google fixes it. It started about a week ago when I saw something strange on my Samsung 7E (see pic 1 from about 1am onwards), the phone seems to be stuck in some kind of loop that caused the CPU to not able to go into deep sleep state.

I've tried many things like enabling and disabling services and apps and eventually also did factory reset just to check if this still happens but nothing works. At first I thought this only happens to Samsung phone but after knowing what to look for, I started to pay more attention and found this also on my Nexus 6P and OPO running AOSP roms. Since my other phones are rooted, I was able to use WLD app to check and sure enough, it shows wakelock from "backup" (see pic 2)

How do you know if you are affected?
1) If your phone is rooted, you can download WLD or BetterBatteryStats that will tell you if you phone has this wakelock
2) If your phone is not rooted, you can download GSam battery monitor and go into Graph -> CPU to check your CPU state.. In idle state (when screen is off doing nothing) the CPU should go into deep sleep mode to safe battery)
3) Do not connect your phone to a charger or computer yet
4) Reboot your phone and use as normal (it is important that you reboot your phone first)
5) Leave your phone idle for sometime
6) Connect your phone to charger or computer (for sometime)
7) You should see something similar to Pic 3 (from 5.45pm onwards)
8) Check the CPU usage or WLD (if rooted), you will see CPU is stucked (at a certain frequency instead of near 0) running and not idling in deep sleep state

Temporary workarounds
1) Once you reboot your phone (see pic 4 around 7pm), it will go back to normal until you plug in to charger again. This is rather annoying having to reboot everytime after a charge so you can try the 2nd option
2) Go to settings -> backup & reset to disable "Backup my data"
3) Reboot phone after disabling it

Having search around the web, I've found that a lot of people have also seen this issues on other phones so you are most likely affected but probably didnt notice it unless you know what to look for

I started getting Google play services error a few days ago On my Note 5, then I've been having major battery drain ever since.

I'm talking like a FEW % of battery for just a few mins use.

Will try this out and see if it fixes thx!

Hi deckcard,

I did follow your instructions on disable "Backup my data". But it seems the same. ( It was already disable before i read your thread, so i just disable it again.)

The GSam battery only indicated as 'android system" taking up the most battery. Perhaps i didnt root my phone. Hence, i wasnt able to see the settings of "View Kernel Wakelocks" in GSam. Unable to pinpoint which exact app drain my battery.


On one night the orange line of the GSam graph at CPU literally drop to 0 & yesterday at night (while i was sleeping, it went up to 1.4 ghz). The whole night it was Never in the 'doze' mode'.

I actually took a couple of screenshot of the GSam battery chart, but forgot to backup that up, when once again factory reset my phone today. I know its kind of hard to visualize what i said.

Oh yes, and when i was using my phone be it on wifi/ data, my phone was rather hot.

try to uncheck non critical google services that requires real time sync under the "Accounts" setting. real time sync doesn't really take a heavy toll on your fone battery. the problem is, for whatever reason, the sync fails. it will continue to retry and this becomes a problem.

for me, i uncheck services like photos, contacts and people details. only perform manual sync as and when needed.

Hmm.. uncheck services? Does it mean disable the app?

If it's stuck at 1.4ghz, something is really wrong. It maybe other rogue apps doing that as what I've saw from the backup bug are stuck around 400mhz region.

I'm still testing as the bug comes and goes being inconsistent. Are you using any Google Apps like photos, drive, keep? Currently, I try enabling Google backup from the backup and reset section but disable sync from playstore, photo, etc. It's running fine but I won't know until a few more charges.

Nope, i am not using any google apps (other than google map. Even the browser i also use the stock version.
I totally disable any auto sync. Use only manual sync.

Im still trying to figure out whats wrong.

I am using the assistance menu by S7 (the one i can just press virtual button to lock home button). Wondering will that contribute to battery drain

The problem maybe due to auto sync as I've automation that turn off and on auto sync at certain time where my cpu be stuck due to wakelock. I'm going to disable that and see if that's the cause.

actually the screen on info shown on the app is not accurate at all.
like mine, it states 1h50m but the integrated battery usage shows 43mins.

You meant the screen on from GSam vs ur stock Battery info? GSam is accurate, however the screen on will reset if you either rebooted or plug in charger to your phone. Sometimes, stock Battery info doesn't reset when reboot hence there you see a difference.

damn... I think this bug killed my Xperia3 Compact. It was running so hot that I factory reset it... and but my wifi + bt were gonners by then. Reset a few times also no use. Then realised the phone got so hot, the back plate popped out a bit!

I've used GSam monitor on all my phones and I don't see it using anymore battery that it should. Maybe u should use bbs or wld to check yourself

While i was sleeping with my wifi OFF and screen off too...
GSam Battery Monitor indicated that my Wifi is on & i am On screen the whole night... *sigh* really dont know why like that

My app in phone only have whatsapp, Sg buses, gsam battery monitor and the music player from Samsung store.

This time round it hovered at 0.2ghz. I do restart my phone every night before I sleep.

I realize a strange issue with my phone. If i turn on the Ultra power saving at night when i am sleeping.. gsam will detect my phone as on screen the whole night. At times i try turning on ultra saving mode at random day of the time and not using my phone, it too indicates i am on screen.
