i think he meant the total cost after adding shipping, taxes, GST and whatever. if you count USD 499 convert to SGD is only about 650SGD which is not a good indication of the total cost.

Yes that's quite interesting question.

Assuming you
  • Ship from the Google Play store at the flat rate of US$13.99
  • Ship to a location without taxes

You would be paying US$499 + US$13.99 ~= US$513

Using Shop online in the U.S from where you live | comGateway and the following assumptions:

  • Weight = 2.5kg
  • Standard shipping
  • Fuel surcharge of 12% of shipping cost
  • Insurance of 0.65% compounded
  • Have to pay GST

We would have

Shipping cost = base US$11 (base 0.5kg) + US$2.85 * 2 = US$22.40
Fuel Surcharge = 0.12 * 22.40 = US$2.70
Insurance = 0.0065 * (499 + 22.40 + 2.70) = US$3.40
GST = 0.07 * (499 + 22.40 + 2.70 + 3.40) = US$37

The total cost, assuming an exchange rate of 1.25 would be
(513 + 22.4 + 2.7 + 3.4 + 37) * 1.25 = SG$723!

Wow that's quite a lot. Apparently that a 16% premium over the base price of US$499. Feel free to correct my calculations, I'm not sure if I'm compounding all the amounts correctly.

The other parts should be coming soon. I really don't get why anyone would get a 10-inch Android. I'm not saying RT is any good, in fact I would not get any RT device (Windows 8 Pro only for me), but it's apparent that for productivity purposes - web browsing (while I appreciate bookmarks and tab syncing, performance is more important - I mean I can set up IE for once and live with better performance, but will have to tolerate with Chrome lag even if it's nicely set up from the get go), office, multi-screen etc, the Surface hands down beats the Nexus 10.

For all other purposes, the iPad is much better with better tablet apps. Heck, even the Windows store is outpacing Android when it comes to tablet apps.

The only only thing I can see people buying the Nexus 10 for is for videos. But it's a little expensive for a device to play just 1080p (i.e. less than the screen rez) videos isn't it. IF Windows RT ever gets a third party app like VLC, and future devices start coming with higher rez displays, I don't see how the Nexus will be able to compete at all. Yes it's quite a BIG 'if', that's why I'm not convinced to buy a RT device right now, because I need a more all-in-one device.

And the UI seems to have degraded in some areas - why the heck do we need a full horizontal black bar just to display 3 buttons WHICH ARE PLACED IN THE MIDDLE - meaning you have to stretch to use any of the core functionalities.

As I've said before, Google, please stick with 7 inchers.

Watched the video. +1 for MS surface :)

Below is from CGW.

Dear X,

We would like to inform that your shipment SGW-XXXX has been held due to value discrepancy. Package value was declared as US$199.

Please be advised that for proper customs declaration and clearance, we need an appropriate value per shipment. Please provide the correct amount per package in order for us to release your shipment. Regardless whether a package is for personal use or a gift, we still need a reasonable value for US customs clearance.

We will provide Shipment insurance in respect of the goods up to the actual or declared cash value or US$10,000.00, whichever is lower. The cost of insurance will be calculated as a percentage of the value of the Shipment (including the cost of the declared value of the goods and shipping cost) in respect of any loss of or physical damage to the goods during transit. Shipment insurance is compulsory for all users of our service.

Please do not hesitate to contact us should you require further assistance.

Do note that US399 for the N10 excludes US Tax and shipping.
Overall cost from Google is US441.21 for the 16GB N10.

Total cost is S$554.53 + S$84.08 = S$638.61

CC FX rate is S$1.2568 : USD1

Must say I'm very tempted but scared of not having warranty cover.
