use it naked everywhere, but I think I'm gonna get a sleeve and a tempered glass screen protector soon.

I know it's stupid to do this. I absolutely know. I hope I can get a fairer picture from the gurus here. given a budget to only purchase 1 device , should I go for the ipad air or nexus 7 (2013)?

I will be looking at wifi only. I understand the air is now lighter and hence I decided to skip mini 2 although initially my comparison is between mini2 and nexus 7 due to portability(weight issues rather than size issue)

Can anyone in the same dilemma or have experience with this two devices please assist?

Don't think the best buy physical stores are selling yet. Got to order online. U need to add the states sales tax. IMHO better get from sg cos price difference may not be much. Plus u get the full lte band support vs the only 1 band supported by US set.x

Anyway it's a birthday present for me. So Im only allow to choose 1. The giver is currently out of town and will only be back in mid Nov. So he asked me to think which would I want, so that we can get it when he is back.

I am not a IT-idiot. I still know how to function a andriod and a apple phone and tablet. Just that since this is the only chance im given, i would like to choose something that will last for long

If it's a gift, no need to think. iPad Air straight away - it's much more expensive, so you'll be getting a lot more value out of the gift. Make sure you ask for the 128GB LTE version

One is a full fledge ultra book one is a tablet.

Most impt is the usage.
Tablets are use for mobile viewing while ultrabooks are mobile processing

Guys, it's a GIFT No need to think liao. Get the most expensive iPad Air, you might consider selling it and getting a less expensive air/mini + Nexus 7... best of both worlds

if, it is from someone u r not close to, don't always interact with, then I will say iPad Air, hoot the most exp specs.

but if it is from someone u r close with, and whose opinion/well being is important to u, then I will say buy the one that u really like/want and will use every day.

Good point raised. Yeah, if it's someone important you should probably choose something that allows you to demonstrate your appreciation of the gift

Just bought nexus 7 2013 on Saturday from Asus(newstead) for $529.

Loving it, although I do need screen protector and a better case than the Asus travel case.

If longevity of the device is your key concern, then I'll say go with the iPad. Don't get me wrong here, the Nexus 7 is a solid device but Apple has a reputation for excellent build quality and usage of premium material (e.g. aluminium over plastic). Even if the device fails on you in the years to come, you're far more likely to be able to find spare parts and repair services for the iPad than Nexus devices.

In addition, Apple devices generally receive official software updates over a longer time frame. The iPad 2 has been out for more than 2.5 years and it's still receiving the latest OS update (iOS7). In contrast, the Motorola Xoom (the closest Android tablet to the Nexus that was released around the same time as iPad 2) stopped getting official OS update after Android 4.1 back in July 2012 (the latest Android version is 4.3, with 4.4 KitKat soon to be released).

There are some other reasons why you may want to go for the iPad, such as the convenience of staying within Apple's ecosystem, e.g. iMessage, Facetime and sharing of paid apps. Even the availability of accessories is more abundant for iPads.

That said, if you're willing to overlook these benefits and still consider getting an Android tablet, the Nexus range is a clear choice. However, with the new Nexus 10 set to be released soon, you might want to wait for it since it's a more direct competitor to the full sized iPad than the Nexus 7.
