30 dollars a month for an LTE plan is just to expensive. Futher more u are just getting A subsidy of only abt $330. To me it is not worth it.

before suggesting, is the person important to you? will he/she mind u u sell away his/her bday gift to u?

if, it is from someone u r not close to, don't always interact with, then I will say iPad Air, hoot the most exp specs.

but if it is from someone u r close with, and whose opinion/well being is important to u, then I will say buy the one that u really like/want and will use every day.

I'm guessing someone that's getting you a tablet for your birthday (an actually asks you for your preference) must at least be special to a good extent. So choosing the right device probably means more than its price value.

Personally, I'm a real android advocate simply because it allows you to do more with your device. (seriously, I think the "Tasker" app alone is enough to get an android over an apple device)

But I guess here are the key comparisons:
iPad Air:
+ Better physical build
+ Better Camera
+ More stable device & OS (less conflicts from apps as well)
+ More tablet optimized app ecosystem
+ More choice of hard covers (and other aesthetic accessories)

Nexus 7:
+ Better customizability (this is a huge understatement)
+ More control of your apps and device behavior
+ Multi user support
+ Much more affordable accessories (and pretty ample options on functional accessories)
+ NFC & wireless charging support

A very important point to note:
iPad air (not iPad Mini??) is a full fledged 10" tablet which will be bigger and heavier with longer battery life (and it's a lot more expensive!).
Nexus 7 is a 7" form factor that will be smaller, lighter and shorter battery life.
(personally, I found that the 7-8" form factor is big enough for most of my needs and it's higher portability is highly valued.)

If longevity of the device is your key concern, then I'll say go with the iPad. Don't get me wrong here, the Nexus 7 is a solid device but Apple has a reputation for excellent build quality and usage of premium material (e.g. aluminium over plastic). Even if the device fails on you in the years to come, you're far more likely to be able to find spare parts and repair services for the iPad than Nexus devices.

In addition, Apple devices generally receive official software updates over a longer time frame. The iPad 2 has been out for more than 2.5 years and it's still receiving the latest OS update (iOS7). In contrast, the Motorola Xoom (the closest Android tablet to the Nexus that was released around the same time as iPad 2) stopped getting official OS update after Android 4.1 back in July 2012 (the latest Android version is 4.3, with 4.4 KitKat soon to be released).

While I concede with build quality, but if you get a Nexus device (unlike other manufacturers like Samsung, ASUS, LG, etc) I believe you will actually have a comparable support from google. (but given that nexus tablets are still new in the market, we can only see that so far Nexus 7 2012 is still fully supported)
It should also be noted, if you want to venture on 3rd party ROMs, they have long lasting support and really creative features.

However, looking at the Nexus phones, Google typically only supports the current generation and one generation prior. For instance, Google will likely drop official support for Galaxy Nexus once the Nexus 5 is out. This has been the trend for the past few years, which means the typical official "lifespan" for Nexus devices is 1.5-2 years, certainly not as long as Apple devices though.

Again, I'm a firm supporter of Android, namely for the customisability and custom rom scene. But I also feel that your typical user wouldn't be and shouldn't have to be concerned with installing custom roms on their device to have the latest OS updates. So if product support is a key concern, one should be fully aware of what they are getting into when getting an Android/Nexus device.

Just bought nexus 7 2013 on Saturday from Asus(newstead) for $529.

Loving it, although I do need screen protector and a better case than the Asus travel case.

That's why i switched to apple iphone from android phone long ago.

Google should really relook at their support policy, imagine iphone 3GS still supported by apple.

I also took a huge risk to buy the nexus 7 2013. But a tablet should really have more functionality to allow me to make full use of it, that's why I bought it instead of the ipad.

Getting from a reseller in Singapore. Called up to check no local waranty in Singapore. I can buy a 32gb one with the price of a local 16gb one. That is why considering whether to get fr open surface or buy from reseller. It is just the waranty.

LTE in Singapore uses bands 3 and 7.

The US LTE sets support Band 3, but not 7. The non-US sets support both Band 3 and 7.

Yes, it will work fine, but you'll generally have poorer LTE coverage here. In areas with only Band 7 coverage, your tablet will fall back to 3G instead.

How much is the reseller selling it for? It's probably cheaper to just buy direct from Amazon instead. 32GB is USD269 with free GlobalShipping.
