It is said to work as fast as Apple’s Face ID technology.
Google is reportedly developing an
advanced face unlock system for its Pixel phones and Chromebooks.
Referred to internally at Google as
Project Toscana, an anonymous source cited by Android Authority claims the facial recognition system has been tested on a Pixel phone with a punch-hole camera cutout, as well as on two Chromebooks using external cameras.
The source added that the tests were carried out in
different lighting conditions, with Project Toscana said to
perform as quickly as Apple’s Face ID technology.
Current Pixel 8 and newer models rely on machine learning for face unlock in well-lit conditions, but the system tends to struggle in low-light conditions.
It remains unclear if or when Project Toscana will be officially unveiled, though Google’s annual I/O developer conference, which is happening in May, could provide an ideal stage for showcasing the technology.
