TL;DR
- Some Pixel owners reported worse performance after installing September’s Android 17 QPR1 update.
- GrapheneOS says it has found a regression in the update that can cause lag, stuttering, freezes, and app crashes under memory pressure.
- While GrapheneOS has already patched the problem, stock Pixel users are still waiting for Google to release a fix.
Android 17 QPR1 was supposed to improve Pixel phones, but for a noticeable number of owners, the September update seems to have had the opposite effect. We recently asked
Android Authority readers
how their Pixels were behaving after installing the update, and performance problems stood out as the most common complaint among those who reported new issues. Now, GrapheneOS may have finally found the reason for at least some of that slowdown.
The privacy-focused project
says it has identified a regression introduced with Android 17 QPR1 that can cause Pixel phones to stutter, lag, or even freeze when memory is under pressure. In more severe cases, affected processes can reportedly be terminated after becoming unresponsive.
Notably, the project says this problem isn’t specific to its flavor of the operating system. The regression originates in Pixel software components supplied by Google, meaning stock Pixel devices running Android 17 QPR1 can be affected as well. GrapheneOS ran into the same issue after adopting Google’s updated firmware and drivers, but says it has already patched the problem in the latest release of its OS flavor.
That discovery also lines up with what
Android Authority readers recently told us about their own Pixels. In a poll conducted after Android 17 QPR1 rolled out, roughly 20% of respondents reported new performance issues after installing the update. Performance was the largest individual problem category in the survey, ahead of UI, display, and connectivity complaints.
Not everyone has been affected, though. Another 31% of respondents said they had experienced no new problems at all, so this clearly isn’t hitting every Pixel in the same way.
