I noticed from all the video reviews that the pixel 4A screen is refreshing constantly with a very visible band compared to other phones that is quite irritating. Is this noticeable with normal daily use?
Not visible to us but to camera yes. It probably has got to do with the kind of dimming method used to adjust the brightness of screen. It probably uses AC dimming where it will turn on and off the back light rapidly to achieve certain level of brightness.
But I could be wrong...haha

That's pretty normal actually and just how display refreshes. it only shows up on camera due a mismatch in shutter speed in comparison to the refresh rate of the display itself. not visible to the human eye one unless you are super super super sensitive.

added this gif as example. If i go for higher shutter speed that doesn't match, will be a lot more obvious. i don't have an ND filter on my cheapo setup so I normally just push shutterspeed up to control lighting cause don't want to lose the bokeh from shooting at wide open aperture (which isn't really the right way to do it hahaha). But if i try to match the shutterspeed a bit it becomes a lot less obvious. the camera can still pick it up a bit, but to my naked eye can't really see.

Alex can help to check if this is available on your review unit pixel 4A? Thanks

I've never been a fan of the fabric cases actually since the 2XL days. using it cause no other choice nia. the case doesn't give much grip, is bulky, the fit isn't the tightest on the phone, and I can't attach phone grips like popsocket on fabric. :s13:

Thank you to all whom helped with my queries regarding the phone.

I have another question. Would you say the camera performance is better than the Redmi Note 9Pro or Mi 10 lite series? I need to replace my broken phone and am leaning towards getting the pixel 4a.

I place an emphasis on being able to take lecture slides from projector clearly from a mini lecture hall distance (15-20m), in addition to other considerations. My current phone (Xiaomi Note 4) is very blurry (even after zooming) for this and am looking for a phone that can handle these tasks while being cheap (no flagship).

haha, but this one is personal preference la. most of my friend who saw the case thought it looked unique and felt nice. For me I prioritise grip, and too used to using popsocket on everything so it's completely out for me. :s13:

Hi Alex,

Since you have the actual unit. Can you help to confirm the Pixel 4a CPU is Snapdragon 730 or 730G?

Yea grip important to me too but I've never used those pop up thingys before. Hopefully its not super slippery can liao.

Bulky is fine since the phone is already so compact.

I don't have the phone, but FYI from what I know the 4a has no telephoto lens, hence everything is a digital zoom. Look at the reviews with camera samples and make your own conclusion. There is a 2x zoom function.

Once I started using them it's hard to go without. it's great if you like to use your phone in bed before you sleep. :s13:

I've not tried the listed XM phones though, but both of them don't really have telephoto lens anyway. 4a don't have telephoto lens, but google has their super res zoom which should help take a bit nicer zoomed in photo. It can go up to 7x. Not sure if it will be enough though. have to see how big the text on the slides are already. :s13:

but at this price point, even if you can find a phone with telephoto lens, pretty sure the quality won't be amazing also.

What bout the CN versions of the phones. You can get CC9 Pro with 108mp camera. Maybe bout $560?

At bout the same price, can get K30 Pro also. Flagship with good cam? If you take at max res, should be able to zoom in & crop

It is entirely possible since got higher MP count, but if don't use pixel-binning, i think image quality won't be that great also, and a lot of chinese phones their image processing is quite aggressive? I've only tried the mi 9T and with the dedicated telephoto cam, can get sharper and cleaner looking images than using 4a digital zoom. Same 730g processor too. lol.

but then overall image quality still lose to pixel though. So is sacrificing other aspects just for better zoomed in images of slides. haha.

there are a lot of phones i've tested with better sensors, but the software can't really take full advantage of it. So i still feel like for regular consumers just doing point and shoot in full auto mode, google's image processing will still be more consistently better.

I am thinking of pre-ordering, but undecided between the retailers. Anyone able to share why they choose Amazon/Challenger/Courts?

Amazon, online retail is their core and their services are much better than Courts and Challenger.
