When it launches next year, the Google Pixel 9a is shaping up to be a pretty impressive smartphone launch from Google. Thanks to a source, we can now provide you with the battery capacity.

Google is upping the battery capacity to 5,000mAh with the Pixel 9a. That’s an increase of about 11%. That’s a wild increase to see year-over-year. Typically, phone batteries only increase around 3-4%, and almost always, they increase under 5%. So, to see this much of a difference is good to see, but a bit unexpected.

The Google Pixel 8a already had some pretty good battery life, as we found in our review. Now, with a battery that’s 11% larger, we’re expecting even better battery life, and it could even break some records in our battery life tests when we get the Pixel 9a in to review next year.

Pixel 9a is also set to sport a 48-megapixel primary camera

As we exclusively revealed last week, the Pixel 9a will also sport a 48-megapixel primary camera, ditching the 64-megapixel camera currently on the Pixel 8a. We believe this would be the same primary camera as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which would be larger, and let in more light thanks to the higher aperture of f/1.7.

Google is sticking with the same 13-megapixel ultrawide camera, however, and is not opting to ditch it for telephoto like some other dual-camera phones have done recently.

We have also exclusively revealed that the Pixel 9a is going to launch much sooner than the Pixel a-series has in the past. We are looking at a mid-March release date, which is about two months earlier than the Pixel 8a and even the Pixel 7a, were launched. This lines up with Google moving everything up with the Pixel 9 launch this year. Since the Pixel 9 launched in August, versus the usual October launch date.

The Google Pixel 9a is going to be bigger and better. Thanks to multiple sources, we can now release almost every spec of the new Pixel 9a ahead of its release next year. Starting things off, the Pixel 9a will move up to a 6.3-inch Actua display, the same size as the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro that were released back in August. And it’ll once again be adaptive to move from 60Hz to 120Hz for a fraction of the price of iPhone 16, which is 60Hz only.

As expected, the Pixel 9a will also be powered by the Tensor G4 chipset, with 8GB of RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of storage. As we’ve confirmed in an earlier exclusive, the Pixel 9a will also sport a 5,000mAh capacity battery, which is about 11% larger than the Pixel 8a, but then again, the Pixel 9a does also have a larger screen. This makes it easier to put a larger battery inside, and those flat sides allow for more space inside the Pixel 9a. The unfortunate news here is that the Pixel 9a charging speeds will stay the same as before, with 18W wired charging and 7.5W wireless charging.

We’ve also been able to confirm once again via another source that the Pixel 9a will sport a 48-megapixel primary camera and a 13-megapixel ultrawide camera, with the front-facing camera also being 13-megapixels.

Finally, the dimensions of Pixel 9a. With the larger screen, the phone is also getting a tad larger, with dimensions of 154.7 x 73.3 x 8.9mm. It also weighs in at 186g. Surprisingly, despite the larger size, Google has managed to make the Pixel 9a lighter than the Pixel 8a (at 188g).

Pixel 9a is expected to launch in March

We have also confirmed that the Pixel 9a is set to launch in mid-March 2025. That’s a few months earlier than usual for Google, and it does also kind of confirm that Google won’t be launching any hardware at Google I/O again next year.

With this earlier launch, we have also been able to confirm the pricing of the Pixel 9a, and thankfully there’s no price increase. Despite a larger display and larger battery this year, the Pixel 9a will remain at $499. Slotting in at $300 less than the Pixel 9 and $500 below the Pixel 9 Pro.

Now that we have leaked all of the specs of the Google Pixel 9a, it’s time to see how it compares to the rest of the Pixel 9 lineup, as well as the Pixel 8a – its predecessor. The Pixel 9a fits in quite nicely; one thing that you’ll really notice here is the dimensions. The Pixel 9a has the same screen size as the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro, but it’s physically larger than both of those devices. The Pixel 9a is about 2mm taller and about 1mm wider, indicating that it still has pretty sizeable bezels still.

The Pixel 9a will also continue using 8GB of RAM, despite the Pixel 9 getting 12GB of RAM due to all of the AI features included on the Pixels now. It also has a much larger battery than the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro. The Pixel 9a sports a 5,000mAh capacity battery, while the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro sport a 4,650mAh capacity battery. That’s about 7% larger for the same size display. Leading us to believe that the Pixel 9a might be the battery champ among the Pixel 9 series.

Unfortunately, the charging speeds remain the same on the Pixel 9a, which has 18W wired charging and 7.5W wireless. That actually means that the Pixel 9a will take longer to charge to 50% or 80% since it is 11% larger and has the same charging speed.

Pixel 9a will debut in March 2025

As we’ve mentioned before, the Pixel 9a should be launching in mid-March 2025. Making it about two months earlier than usual. This does make plenty of sense, seeing as the Pixel 9 series also launched about two months earlier than usual. It will also remain at the same price of $499. This is good to see, giving it a bigger gap between it and the vanilla Pixel 9 since the Pixel 9 did get a price increase this year.

At $499, the Pixel 9a is looking to be a pretty good value when it does launch in a few months. With plenty of big upgrades (literally), and the same price, Google should sell a boatload of Pixel 9a units.

TL;DR
  • Real-world images of an apparent Google Pixel 9a prototype have appeared online.
  • The images corroborate previous design-related changes, such as a rejigged camera housing.

The Google Pixel 9a is expected to launch next year, and initial pictures and renders show a design that differs from the Pixel 9 series. Now, real-world pictures of the apparent Pixel 9a have leaked again.

Twitter user feni_book posted two pictures showing what appears to be a Pixel 9a prototype, although it’s unclear if they were the actual source for these images. In any event, the back of the phone shows unique patterns and a different logo in place of the typical Google logo. These markings are typically used to identify individual prototypes in order to prevent and clamp down on leaks. The back of the phone and a sticker also mention that this is an “EVT,” or engineering validation test device, which is a type of prototype. Check out the images below.

One of the images also contains an IMEI number, and searching for this number in various IMEI databases reveals that this is a Google device bearing the model number GTF7P. It’s unclear if this is merely a prototype model number or if it’s representative of a commercial Pixel 9a. For what it’s worth, the Pixel 8a had model numbers such as G8HHN, G576D, and G6GPR. The Pixel 7a also featured model numbers like GWKK3, GHL1X, and G82U8. Check out the screenshots of the IMEI listings below.

In any event, one picture shows a pill-shaped camera housing. This corroborates previous leaks and means the Pixel 9a won’t offer a camera visor bar akin to recent Pixel flagships. Other design-related features spotted here include flat edges with rounded corners and a center-mounted punch-hole cutout.

These images also come a couple of months after a major specs leak. It’s believed that the Pixel 9a will ship with a 6.3-inch Actua display, a Tensor G4 chip with 8GB of RAM, 128GB or 256GB of storage, and a 5,000mAh battery. The phone will apparently stick with 18W wired and 7.5W wireless charging speeds. Expect a 48MP main camera and 13MP ultrawide lens on the back. Leaks also point to a March 2025 launch window.

Google’s Pixel 9 series just came out a little over a month ago, but there’s one more model coming – Pixel 9a. As usual, we expect this to launch in the Spring, typically around Google I/O. But here’s an early look at the new design of the Pixel 9a, thanks to Onleaks.

One of the biggest design changes this year is the camera bar. It looks to be nearly flush with the back of the Pixel 9a, perhaps with a small ring around it that sticks out. It looks a lot like the LG V60 ThinQ from a few years ago. It does inherit the new camera layout as the Pixel 9, and is sticking with an ultrawide and a wide camera here. Another thing you’ll notice is those pretty large bezels. Though expected on a phone that’s going to be under $500, they are still very noticeable.

Google Pixel 9a will launch with Android 15 and 7 years of updates

The Pixel 9a will actually do something that the rest of the Pixel 9 series couldn’t do, and that’s launching with Android 15. In fact, Android 15 still hasn’t launched – it’s expected to start rolling out on October 15. And it’ll also get seven years of updates, just like the Pixel 8a from earlier this year.

Furthermore, this could be the final Pixel device to use a Samsung-designed processor, as the Pixel 10 is set to receive a fully Google-customized processor made by TSMC. However, at the right price, this could be a pretty impressive phone to pick up next year.

We do expect that the specs will be very similar to the Pixel 8a, which included a 6.1-inch display, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It will ditch the Tensor G3 for the Tensor G4 of course, and the battery could get a tad larger. On Pixel 8a, the battery capacity was 4492mAh. Google’s Pixel 8a was announced on May 7, 2024, and we expect a similar date for Pixel 9a in 2025.

You can view the full 5K resolution of these renders here.

We’re getting closer and closer to the Pixel 9a being announced by Google. While we’ve already confirmed a number of specs about the device, we now can confirm the entire spec sheet, from multiple sources. This spec sheet comes from a wireless carrier source, and was confirmed by a second source. So this is pretty legit.

Let’s start off with the big stuff. So, Google Pixel 9a will be powered by the Google Tensor G4 processor, as expected. And that comes with the Titan M2 security chip, 8GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Pixel 9a will also sport a 6.285-inch Actua Display which will have a peak brightness of 2,700 nits and HDR brightness of 1,800 nits. This display is protected by Gorilla Glass 3, which is older, but it is also less likely to scratch compared to some of the new versions of Gorilla Glass.

The camera setup will mostly remain the same. We’re looking at a 48-megapixel GN8 Quad Dual Pixel primary camera, with an aperture of f/1.7. And an ultrawide camera that is the Sony IMX712. This is a 13-megapixel sensor with an aperture of f/2.2. This is the same camera being used for the front-facing camera.

Finally, the Pixel 9a is being powered by a 5,100mAh capacity battery. That is about 13% larger than the Pixel 8a’s battery capacity, in the same physical size phone. Charging speeds have improved, slightly. We’re now looking at 23W wired charging, however wireless charging is still 7.5W and does not support Qi2. And it will also be rated at IP68 for water-resistance and dust-resistance, just like previous Google Pixel a models.

Pixel 9a will be slightly taller, wider, however it will weigh less

Despite having a 13% larger capacity battery this year, the Pixel 9a will be just a tiny bit taller and wider, and surprisingly it will also weigh less. Dimensions for the Pixel 9a are 154.7 x 73.3 x 8.9mm, and it’ll weigh 185.9g. Compared to the Pixel 8a which was 152.1 x 72.7 x 8.9mm with a weight of 188g. That’s just enough change to make sure that Pixel 8a cases won’t work with the Pixel 9a. However, when using the device, you likely won’t notice a huge difference.

The Pixel 9a will come in Obsidian, Porcelain, Iris and Peony, the same colors as the vanilla Pixel 9. We can also confirm pricing, which will remain the same this year. That’s $499 for the 128GB model, and an extra $50 for the mmWave model that will be specific for Verizon.

If these specs are real, and go into production, don't understand why they want to de spec the main cam sensor

Would 9 or 9a be a better buy?
For sure 9a will have better battery life, but the camera how?

Google Pixel 9a reportedly launching March 26

Since we’ve already revealed just about everything else about the Google Pixel 9a, it’s time to talk about pre-orders and shipping. As we’ve noted in previous reports, the Google Pixel 9a is going to be launching earlier than usual. Typically, Google would launch it right around Google I/O in May. But this year, it’s moving up to mid-March, similar to the Pixel 9 series moving from October to August last year.

According to a source, Google will start pre-orders for Pixel 9a on March 19. The devices will begin to ship on March 26. Pixel 9a will also be available in-store starting on March 26. As we revealed earlier this week, Google Pixel 9a will start at $499 in the US for the 128GB model, with the 256GB model going for $599. There will be an extra $50 charged for Verizon’s mmWave model once again. And in Canada, the pricing is $679 and $809 respectively.

Google is eliminating the camera bump with Pixel 9a

We have already published a few renders of the Pixel 9a, and the biggest design change coming this year is, the camera bar. Or the lack of one. Google appears to be going with a flush back this time for the Pixel 9a. Now that could be due to the much larger battery this year. And in fact, this will be the largest battery ever in a Pixel device – 5,100mAh. Beating out the Pixel 9 Pro XL which is currently the largest, at 5,060mAh.

Pixel 9a will be a tiny bit wider and taller than the Pixel 8a, but retain the same thickness at 8.9mm. It will also shed a few grams off of its weight, coming down to 185.9g. Surprisingly, despite that large battery, Google is sticking with a 6.28-inch display, so it’ll still be a pretty small phone.

Finally, the Pixel 9a will come in four colors: Obsidian, Porcelain, Iris, and Peony.

The Google Pixel 9a is set to be released next month, as we revealed recently. The Pixel 9a is going to start pre-orders on March 19, and start shipping on March 26. So what kind of freebies are we getting with the Pixel 9a? Honestly, it’s nothing surprising.

According to our source, those purchasing the Google Pixel 9a will get Fitbit Premium for 6 months, YouTube Premium for 3 months and Google One 100GB for 3 months. This is similar to the freebies that Google offered for the rest of the Pixel 9 series, though interestingly Google is not including the 2TB + AI plan for Google One. So if you want to use all of the Gemini Advanced features, you’d need to pay for it yourself.

Google Pixel 9a is set to be the best sub-$500 smartphone, again

As we also unveiled last week, the Google Pixel 9a will cost $499. Meaning that it is not getting a price increase this year, which is a really impressive price for what you’re getting. That includes a 6.28″ display, powered by the Tensor G4 processor, with 8GB of RAM. There’s also 128GB of storage, and a 256GB option (which will cost $599).

Google is also upgrading the camera setup this year, with a 48-megapixel primary camera, and a 13-megapixel ultrawide sensor. Unfortunately, the Pixel 9a still won’t be getting a telephoto lens.

However, the biggest upgrade on the Pixel 9a is likely the 5,100mAh capacity battery. That makes it the largest battery that Google has ever put into a Pixel device. The Pixel 9 Pro XL is only 5,060mAh. That means that the Pixel 9a should have some really incredible battery life, since the rest of the Pixel 9 series has really good battery life thanks to the Tensor G4 and the new modem.

Finally, the Pixel 9a is going to be available in four colors. These include Porcelain, Obsidian, Peony and Iris.

Its Gonna Be Huge GIFs | Tenor

The Pixel 9a leaks continue today with an official-looking render that’s on the low-res side but provides an idea of the screen size and bezels.

Evan Blass today shared a sole “9a” image that shows off the front profile of this mid-range 2025 Pixel phone. The corners are similar to the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro as does the larger — to my eye — front-facing camera. You can make out the antenna lines on the rails.

Pixel 9a bezel

The wallpaper is clearly from the “Swirling petals” collection, though it doesn’t match any of the backgrounds already on the Pixel 9 series. The Pixel Launcher is unchanged in these images, but that’s not surprising. Any updates are reserved for the big Android release/flagship launch.

It’s hard to tell from the low-resolution nature of this render, but the left/right and bottom bezels look to be uniform, while the top one is just a tiny bit taller. The Pixel 9a could be following in the footsteps of the 2024 lineup.
