A little info for all you guys.

If you are in China for business or something but only there for 3 days the most, then just use your international data roam from our local service provider. Confirm you can have access to Google, FB, Twitter and all the China banned services.

International data roaming bypasses the Great Firewall of China. This explains why when you go back to hotel and use any local WiFi in China, this bypass is gone.

Any longer in China, use the cross-border SIM cards.

Control. Starhub is limited to $10 a day for 100MB a day. So if you are there for 3 days it is OK.

going to shanghai tomorrow - first ever business trip as well.

was thinking of getting the china sim (not sure what plans are available, anyone can share?), then use vpn to bypass to get to fb etc. am using android phone, and saw this cloudvpn. does it work?

would appreciate other tips too (not only on data). thank you all!

ANY Data Roaming SIM used in China is able to access Banned websites that is inaccessible with Local China SIM.

The Local Prepaid SIM are available, but you need to register with your passport. And not every small stall is able to register. They are only able to register Local ID.
Need to find bigger retail store.

Local Prepaid SIM also have Monthly Recurring Fee. And as mentioned, you are only able to terminate it from the same province you got it.

Best to get Hong Kong prepaid SIM that is able to access in China.
Or Local Singapore SIM that has data roaming package there.

VPN is another issue, you need to install and activate before you reach into China.
My issue when i was there last year is not able to register the VPN even after installing it. For both PC and Android phone.

For VPN I'm using 帽子VPN for android. Good enough for me, able to fb, Gmail, surf block sites. VPN app needs to be downloaded from Chinese app store or direct from Chinese websites.
